how to defret a bass

i want to defret a bass but i might just buy a fretless bt im wondering can u still see where the frets would be

You will be able to see where the frets were (unless you match the wood filler to the grain of fingerboard (which is never going to happen...))

You should watch this video series (there's 10 parts) for a really good idea of what to do.

what about on a store bought one

You can always get an unlined fretless from a store. You will not be able to see the lines because there are none.

It is easy to see the lines on self-defretted basses and lined basses.

Depends on whether is has fretlines, or not. Some do, some don't.

I have a lined fretless jazz from them, it is pretty good and the price won't break the budget. The Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz from Squier is very nice as well.
