Gluing a new shaft on is a very good idea, but not super glue- the surfaces will not be smooth enough. Use some epoxy and be careful it does not glue the shaft to the pot, and then be VERY careful with it from now on.

They are, in fact, much less laborious to install, which means lower production costs and, hopefully, a lower price point for the consumer. I can think of no reason whatsoever why a board-mounted pot would be more reliable.FYI - PCB mounted pots are much more reliable and much less labor than hard wired pots - that is why they are used.
