I've been getting back in to Pantera recently and I've been listening to the Cowboys From Hell 20th Anniversary Re-issue version, with the demo tracks. I particularly like Domination, because of the sick bass tone Rex has in it.
Now back then (I'm assuming this is very late 80s, '88 or '89) - if the '91 videos from Moscow are anything to go by - Rex was using Charvel P/J basses and I think Ampeg amps. At the moment, I don't have access to either of these and I probably wont for a long time. But I'm picking up a Squier Classic Vibe P soon, which should help me in my quest for this tone.
I appreciate that his choice of amp will affect the tone to a degree but I'm assuming that the bass and pickups also play a large part. I know a CV Precision isn't the same as an '80s Charvel P/J, but I'm just looking for the kind of amp settings needed to produce this kind of tone, with lots of low end but plenty of growl with the ability to cut through the mix.
Anyone have any ideas?
