HOW TO INSTALL UBUNTU STUDIO 9.10 WITHOUT HAVING THE INSTALL #%$&%# FAIL!:

I use Windows 7 x64 and I'm evaluating Reaper to see if it will do what I want it to do. Reading the manual suggests it might be good enough for me to put Sonar Pro (I've used Cakewalk for over 10 years) out to pasture.

I'm not at all resistant to losing Windows, but I'm not going to give up all of my familiar and working systems. If Reaper were on Linux, perhaps.

When I got my new machine last May or so, I had formatted two smaller OS partitions and a big "data" partition. Ubuntu installed itself on the data partition. Since I had no compelling reason for Ubuntu, I abandoned the idea of dual boot - I needed a working machine quickly. I (unfortunately) don't have time to mess around with Linux, despite my respect and admiration for it.

Since you've already sprung for Windows 7, in your position I'd choose the option which placed the minimum amount of binary BS between me and my musical inspiration.

It's just a matter of time before you upgrade your hardware (or pick up an old machine which can run Ubuntu well. A fast 3GB of DDR 400 RAM, 256 or 512MB AGPx8 graphics card-era machine with two 500GB ATA133 or SATA/SATAII hard drives + a DVD burner would do it dirt cheap).

At which point you could set up your old PC as an Ubuntu Studio rig and familiarize yourself with it in your spare time without compromising your work flow.

I'm glad to see there are other talkbass people using linux for music. On my side I am using jack, ardour, hydrogen and jackrack on ubuntu 9.04.

I modified my install to make it work properly with jack in real-time but I recommend to everyone not familiar with linux to start with ubuntu studio.

For the hardcore, you have to install the real-time kernel (linux-rt), allow your user to use real-time capabilities (I don't remeber exactly but it has something to do with editing /etc/security/limits.conf and the realtime-lsm module:ninja:) and install the software you need and then reboot with the newly installed real time kernel. All that is done with ubuntu-studio;)

Oh, and Windows user, I can have half the latency on Linux than windows XP with the same sound card...

OK now we need a Linux club on here, where is my number. I run Ubuntu Netbook edition on my Aspire one, and heck I go back to the days of having to recompile a caldera kernel to get a sound card to work.

I'm still working with the beta, so the cash hasn't been spent yet. At the same time, I'm an IT guy by day and it's a Microsoft shop. The time I spend on Windows 7 will pay off when our company switches to that operating system.

At the same time, I really like Linux, just not enough to justify making the switch from a working system. I'm thinking of putting a non-DAW laptop together with Linux. I'd like to learn the lay of the land.

In this town (Minneapolis) there are no jobs in Linux, unfortunately. I wish I could justify (if just to myself and my wife) learning Linux better. The laptop will be one of many forays I've made on to Linux. I love the idea, but I have been making a living supporting and developing software on Windows for a _LONG_ time.

Honestly the Netbook Ubuntu is pretty straight forward with the exception of dealing with having no optical media in the device to install. So unless you have a usb cd-rom you will have to image the install to a usb drive.

The netbook is a handy quick tool, I don't feel like carrying multimedia capable laptops anymore so it is a compromise. On a netbook, some audio might be nice but it just doesn't have the horsepower (even under linux) to be more than a scratchpad.

Oaky-doaky. The 100% free plan B:

Download the Ubuntu .iso of your choice (the live CD is good for testing compatibility with various PCs), vet its MD5SUM, then download VirtualBox and run Ubuntu as a virtual machine (which can be installed from the Ubuntu.iso without having to burn a CD).

Given that you're an IT guy by profession, learning a leading Linux desktop OS may prove to be an Link Removed as well as good fun.

I too tend to be leery of the current generation of netbook's ability to run multi-track audio effectively. As I currently don't need portability, I'm going to hold out for a dual-core processor and 3GB of RAM at least.

However, the folks who are offering the Indamixx Netbook claim to have developed a low overhead Ubuntu & 64Studio-derived OS/application set which runs well on the hot-rodded, pre-loaded netbook they are currently offering AND which also works with Ubuntu's software repositories! :)

Musicians who are in the market for a netbook right now may wish to consider one--especially in view of this e-mail I received a while back:

if you work with computers on a daily basis at all, Linux should be very simple.

Put a hard drive partition on your laptop or desktop or whatever you're using this one, with enough space for what you want to use linux for.. and run a dual boot windows/linux setup, and use it like that.
 
If Ubuntu is installed on a computer which has a preexisting Windows (or *other PC operating system) installation, then as part of the installation process, Ubuntu's GUI-based hard drive formatter will offer the option of shrinking the Windows (or *) partition to make room for Ubuntu and thus create a dual-boot PC:

1. If you have another operating system (e.g. Windows XP) and you want a dual boot system, select the first option: "Install them side by side, choosing between them at each startup."

Editor's Note: This option will ONLY appear if you have another operating system installed, such as Microsoft Windows. Remember that, after the installation, the Windows boot loader will be overwritten by the Ubuntu boot loader!

From my own experience:

1) Please DON'T try this on your main computer if you don't know how to format hard drives and install & set up an operating system etc. Experiment on a different machine or use VirtualBox instead.

2) Make sure all of your important data is backed up to a different hard drive (or better yet two) before proceeding.

3) Confirm that your Windows install is healthy.

4) De-fragment your Windows install (to maximize the amount of contiguous free space upon which to install Ubuntu).

5) Re-confirm that your Windows install is still healthy.

6) Follow the on-screen instructions which are laid out in step-by-step screen shots with explanations in the above link.

I tell you, I am anxiously watching the "android" future, especially in conjunction with Maemo development and the not so bright future of Symbian. I see the netbook as a short time item. I see the lessons learned from netbooks making full scale laptops become more portable and battery efficient. On the flip side I see the direction the Nokia N series tablets were going and the new iPad (hate that name) leading to the new convergence point of portable productivity. What they need to develop is a fold able LCD device to take it to the next level.

I would really never try to do any serious music production on less than a full blown desktop station. If I had a live show that "depended" on computer production then I would rack mount some desktops for that purpose. To me the beauty of portable computing systems is productivity, and to me for music and music business, that means scratch pad, and networking. As I start to ramp up getting session work, balancing gigs, practices, meetings, etc. I find these devices helping me not lose the idea (or the client) more so they find them as a link in the studio production chain.

A note on resizing partitions and creating dual boot machines. It is my personal experience that it is best to use a standalone bootable repartitioning setup such as Gparted before conducting a distro install. This is especially true for devices with limited resources. The advantage of having the partitioning service running with no extraneous OS or installation overhead I have found to directly correlate to less data recoveries and/or corrupted boot sectors following resize/re-partitioning.

Good to see a linux music thread here! I have completely switched to open source programs for music, after having used ubuntu for everything else for a few years. I am using a distro called AV linux for music stuff, ubuntu for everything else. AV is more stable for me than ubuntu studio was, and I just like the way it works. It is debian testing based. I love ubuntu karmic as my everyday OS, don't miss windows for anything at all. For those that say windows "Just works" they are very wrong- there is a lot of configuring to do on a windows OS just to get all your hardware together, the only difference is they are exe files to install drivers, so it is less pain maybe, but after you configure your linux system you also know a lot more about how things work. And AV pretty much "just worked" for me. A little fiddling with things to get performance where I need it, but that was no different on windows- finding the right latency settings, etc. was important and now that I know how to do it it is no longer "hard."
Reaper runs OK through wine but not OK enough not as smooth as on windows for me- ardour is running well for me, a few random crashes here and there, but I pretty much know what causes those (my friend on protools has been having nightmares lately, wiht a system built exactly to digi's specs for a compatible machine, totally senseless errors- except when I was getting crashes on ardour the developer himself was helping to fix them, as well as about 5 other people, and the problem was sorted in about 2 days).
Anyway, keep the linux thread going!!

Yup. More affordable, compact LCD devices with faster processors, more RAM, larger & cheaper solid state hard drives, and an external monitor option along these lines may be attractive to on-the-go musicians (plane trips & hotel rooms):
