Wow, good reading. I wish more people would be willing to think out of the box. Nobody believes me when I tell them about this stuff. They find it too hard to believe that you can actually be virtually safe from virii and malware (virtually, I guess nothing is 100%, someone could in theory write this stuff for linux I guess, but why?). All that extra crap running in the background to "protect" you from something that doesn't need it in the first place. I prefer to choose what I install...
 
Hmm... 'Till now i'd never heard of Android, Maemo, and Symbian.

Yup. More affordable, compact LCD devices with faster processors, more RAM, larger & cheaper solid state hard drives, and an external monitor option along these lines may be attractive to on-the-go musicians (plane trips & hotel rooms):

+1 on using small systems for capturing & conveying inspiration and big systems for further elaboration.

The mobile market is really heating up right now and the options are really in their infancy. The thing is not that a lot new is being done, what is happening is the Iphone spurned the more user friendly mobile tech market. Competition is good, although I fear my all time mobile favorite (Symbian) will be a casualty in this war.

Well, I downloaded the avlinux3r1-20100201.iso last night and vetted its md5sum. Everything checked out.

I then burned it to a DVD-R and used it to boot my PC (ASUS *P4P800 Deluxe, P4 Prescott 3.20 GHz, 3GB DDR400 RAM, 2 x 500GB PATA, 1 x 500GB SATA, 1 x DL Lightscribe DVD, and 1 x DL regular DVD burners).

There was one deal-breaking (for me anyway) hitch. The AV Linux live DVD wouldn't recognize either of my USB 2.0-based Wi-Fi adaptors:

A now-superseded AirLink101 AWLL6080 (supported as an Atheros device under Ubuntu 9.04 or later even though it uses a Ralink chipset), and an hField Technologies' Wi-Fire (supported by Linux kernel 2.6.24 or later, circa Ubuntu 8.04.1).

The Ubuntu 9.04 (or later) live desktop CD (and install), and an Ubuntu Studio 9.10 install will recognize both of these Wi-Fi adapters without having to resort to the use of NDISwrapper.

Send a message to Glenn on the messageboard there, I guarantee you he will help you in a timely fashion. He was very helpful to me in getting up and running. Av is based on debian testing, so is a little more spartan than ubuntu, but that's what makes it good for recording. He'll help you get sorted out though.

AV Linux looks good, and getting it to recognize a USB-based Wi-Fi adapter which explicitly supports Linux like the Wi-Fire does would be quite useful indeed.

"Disk partitioning is the creation of separate divisions of a hard disk drive using partition editors such as fdisk. Once a disk is divided into several partitions, directories and files of different categories may be stored in different partitions.

Many new Linux sys admin (or Windows admin) create only two partitions / (root) and swap for entire hard drive. This is really a bad idea. You need to consider the following points while partitioning disk..."
 
Partitioning is my biggest gripe with most OEM installs. On Windows I prefer to at minimum have a main data storage partition, and thankfully under Windows 7 there are better tools to integrating that data partition into your My * areas.

As for Linux, at minimum /, swap, and /home. On my dual boot machines there is usually a fat32 partition that is /mnt/Store or something of that effect to represent media storage.

Order of importance to me for need for their own partition after a /home partition.

I'll be going with a fancier partition scheme when installing Ubuntu Studio 10.04 (which will be a long term release ie supported for three years as opposed to 18 months) which is due for release at the end of April.

The biggest thing about partitioning is what do you want to have to recover if something fails, or as you distro hop. I don't like to lose my home directory that is for sure. /usr depends, because with distro hopping (as knock on wood Linux has never catastrophically failed on me), different distros it is better to reinstall your preferred apps as you hop. Better optimization that way.

The biggest reason for /var being its own partition is more if we are talking about a server. Especially if you are running a webserver and your apache root is configured under /var/www which is actually fairly common. I have heard logic for /etc but honest truth if I had something really particular in there that I wanted to save I would keep a copy of it else where incase an upgrade over wrote the setting.

I can keep expounding, also there is plenty of high seas geekery among the many Linux specific forums.

On the assumption that one wants to install & stay with Ubuntu Studio exclusively, would you say that, for simplicity's sake, /, swap, /home (to confirm, in that order?) would be sufficient for improving personal data security and guarding one's system against malware/hackers?

On this last point, would also having a separate /tmp partition aid in further insulating one's Ubuntu Studio install from Internet-born incursion attempts?

What I'm aiming for is a better-than-stock-install security/partitioning approach for Ubuntu Studio newbies.

Speaking of security and newbies *waves* :D, before commencing any Internet surfing session it's a good idea to confirm that your Ubuntu Studio system is up-to-date with all of the latest security updates.

To do so: with your PC connected to the Internet, launch 'Update Manager' (it's in 'System'-->'Administration').

I will add to this, unless you are an experienced *nix administrator or power user. You really should not be monkeying around much at the shell prompt in most modern *nix distributions designed for beginner to intermediate level users.

If you must, make sure you look at the "man" pages (for the novice man command is how you get documentation of your commands where applicable within the system) to thoroughly understand what you are doing, especially if you have to su to do the command or combine sudo, and of course if you have to log in as root, well you just shouldn't have to in most modern systems.

The thing is, taking Ubuntu as an example. There is little you have to do these days at that level to get great functionality out. The days of compiling your own kernel to make things work and dependency hell are waning. Granted you can still do that if you want, hence the power, but if you are saying "huh?' to half of what I said here stay away. I mean you don't go monkeying around in the windows registry on a daily basis do you? I know not a great example but true.

Edit: by stay away I mean stay away from this type of digging in, not linux. Besides you are musicians, not software engineers or system admins, ok some of you might be, but you get my point. You don't have to understand IRQ in most days to set up your usb interface. Modern linux is getting better and better at more things just working without geek level tweakery.

On the software side, I agree. Two UNIX-derived operating systems (each featuring a user-friendly GUI) running on one machine when cost-saving Open Source apps. like Open Office, and the GIMP etc are available for Mac OS X (which is reasonably priced and offers easy-to-use multi-media options) as well as Linux? :hmm:

However, I was inspired to post that link by a recent TB thread in which a PC user came into possession of an older MacBook (sans Apple software) which he didn't know what to do with (he wound up selling it).

'Thing is those older MacBooks (the chunkier white ones) have a feature which many PC notebooks lack: an IEEE 1394a (FireWire) port (6 pin) which supports bus power.

I believe that if one uses a two channel, USB-based/bus-powered audio interface, then an external 2.5" 7,200 RPM FW drive can be used as a target drive for recording audio on to, and playing back a larger # of audio tracks without hiccups, thus yielding a portable DAW with a more formidable track count during mix-down.

As well the FireWire port-equipped MacBooks sport a user-upgradable hard drive (stock, 5,400 RPM, but can take a 7,200 RPM unit) and use commonly available DDR2 notebook RAM in various speeds (depending upon the particular MacBook model).

Hardware-wise a recent previous generation MacBook (one with a white plastic case) may be a good option for those who prefer using Ubuntu Studio (or another Linux multi-media distro).

Also, I read somewhere that the internal WiFi adaptor in those plastic MacBooks has a good range.

(Of course all of this depends upon getting Ubuntu Studio to run properly on a chosen, or available, MacBook.)
