Yes I agree and that is the reason I believe the OP should simplify his signal path and forget about the active onboard preamp for now.If the tone is in the hands, why did Marcus Miller even bother to change amps or use a tube pre? Why not just jack straight in to the board?
Tone is not ONLY in the hands, but tone shaping tools can hide the problems that a new player needs to address to get better in order to make the most with tone shaping tools.
