how to safely ship an instrument

Yeah, the large guitar boxes from Uline are the best. I've sent all kinds of guitar and basses in them, both in cases and not in cases, with (knock on wood) no issues. Use lots of bubble wrap and common sense. And I've had really good luck shipping with Fedex Ground. For some reason, it tends to be a lot cheaper than UPS.

yeah, my general rule of thumb is just not to have anything moving inside the hardshell case, and then the case inside of the shipping box.

I really don't have room in my house to store guitar sized boxes, sheets of styrofoam, a supply of packing peanuts and bubble wrap. For me, the right answer is taking it to the UPS store and letting them pack it. And insurance means that if it is damaged, my buyer will be compensated. The last guitar I sold, they charged me less than $10 for packing it.
