How to test an amp

Hi guys,

I've been playing through an Eden Traveller 550 head and 4x10 cabinet for about 8 years now. It doesn't sound as live and crunchy as it used to. It used to have a real edge to the sound. I've never had any work done on it.

Is there a way to check the amp or see if tubes need replacing etc or is it a situation of "take it to a professional"?

Preamp valves wear out eventually, but there are an awful lot of original ones still in service.

Other possibilities, you might need a hearing test? Your strings might be deader than a dead thing? Bass battery?

Turn up the top end/treble,that,ll do it

Speakers can change with years of use as well. They're a moving part. Eventually they wear out.

You can test tubes with a tube tester and you can test the output of an amp with a signal generator, resistive dummy load, oscilloscope, and voltmeter. If you don't have these tools then you cannot fully test an amplifier's output.

new tubes can make an old amp come alive again. not sure if there is a way to test tubes at home.

Get a new tube, that is a cheap way to test the amp.
Having a spare is always good.
I have been running my Eden 400 since 1997 with no issues.
Eden cab for 5 years.
