How Versatile are Rick's?

I've never played a Ric but I want one desperately.
From what I've been able to tell, they're very versatile, but they have a really distinct sound. I've seen them used widely, but you can almost always tell it's a Ric.

After playing Rics for a long time I have sold most of my Rics and I am thinking of selling my last 3 ...

I am smitten with my own basses that I build in my workshop ...

Alright so I know that sounds bad. I suppose I should have said I want to try one desperately, and then I'll probably end up buying it anyway. But we'll see of course.
