How well do you know your strings??

Hi Folks,

Bought this bass second hand a few weeks ago and was wondering if anyone here can tell what strings they are from photos alone. I quite like them (although don't like the fact the previous owner only got around 1.5-2 winds around the post) and want some spares or to change them. If you recommend a different brand please state your reasons.

Thanks. I suppose if anyone is going to know it would be yourself. I suppose there is no way of telling from a photo approx what gauge they would be just looking at the nut or if you would hazard a guess? I don't own a micrometer or decent small calipers.

How do you rate them compared to other brands of flats?

They sell a .45-.95, .45-.100, .50-.100, and a .50-.105 set. Sorry, but I cannot really tell the gauge. I would guess they are prolly about .50 to .100 or .105. If you have a bass strung the bridge it will require extra long strings, and it may cut the number of options you have. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Thanks for that, but do you mean if I go through body stringing i'd need extra long sets.

Yes, you will need the longer versions if you are going through the body. Regular D'Addario sets are typically made for top loaded bridges. Order or buy the sets labeled "super long" which you can use for 35" to 36 " scales. It should be noted that I have use regular length strings and the silk came over the nut, so I gave them a haircut with a disposable razor. It is perhaps better to use the correct length string sets.
