How would you build this tone?

Was diggin' it 'til the scream vocals. Anyway- sounds like a classic hard rock bass tone, a P bass through an SVT/810 rig, no fx. That's my take, though I'd also suggest you chase your own tone, rather than trying to cop someone else's. Best of luck to you.

Obligatory Darth Vader vocals then. I don't get the whole "building" tone, "Building" a rig. Buy some gear. Plug it in. Play. There's a good Marcus Miller line about this somewhere. Geez I'm startin' to sound like a cranky old f...

I call them "Cookie Monster" vocals

As far as the bass tone.... there are lots of good bass distortions
out there but I hear a little octave going on as well. I would suggest a multi FX unit like the Korg AX3000b, Boss Me50B or 20b
etc. With these, you cane set up different FX for each song in your set as well as have other FX handy in one unit. I would get one with a built in pedal.

Here's MY take on it:

Start w/either a P-Bass or a dual Humbucker equipped bass w/a maple neck. Alder, maybe basswood (basswood's kinda iffy tho... some are boomy, some aren't), or mahogany body will help w/the depth/girth you're hearing in that tone. If using dual humbuckers, keep the blend @ least 75% towards the neck. If you're using a tube amp, dial in your preamp til you can get a touch of break-up when you dig in, but nice & clean using a normal touch. If you're using a SS amp, try a VTBass or a tube preamp/overdrive like an EBS ValveDrive (or if you're handy w/a soldering iron... mod an English Muff'n w/the cap swap in C4 mentioned in the effects forum [search effects for Muff'n Mod]) Use the heaviest roundwound strings you're comfortable with. I like D'addario Pro Steels myself, you might prefer nickel wounds tho.

Once you've got that all dialed in for a nice bluesy type of Duck Dunn tone, use a hard attack (either fingerstyle from the rear pickup back, or a pick) to get it to break up & overdrive a li'l on the initial attack.

That should get you in the ballpark.

When I saw HoF in Dec. their bassist was using what appeared to be an SVT-CL/810 rig on stage & a P-Bass w/a pick fwiw.

i totally agree here, it sounds like a SVT rig with a pick.

the reason i said go with a sansamp and a poweramp is becuase you can get the tone with the sansamp, and patch it into whatever amp you are running currently, whether it's a full blown amp, or just a power section.

All you old codgers ought to recognize that Matt Pike is the man and his singing is 1000% better than the typical formulaic metal BS. Plus he's a RIPPING guitar player.

I guess this is the new album, can't say I'm a fan of the production on it.

Anyway, the bass sound. When I saw them a few years ago, Des was using some sort of all black Ampeg head with two 8x10's.

Here's a clip of him when he was in Zeke - looks like the same rig but with one 8x10.

I agree. (vocals) I dont want this to be a vocal argument thread. But he's got a cool voice. Not cookie monster or whatever. Its a little throatier version of lemmy is all.

I believe I will be getting a B1500 or B2000 so I will have to run some sort of pedal or preamp to get the dirt.

Sounds like a pick on a humbucker through a big ol' tube amp to me. I'm not savvy enough to positively ID the rig, but it could be an old Sunn 2000S. They get that same sort of almost bellicose, urgent roar when you open them up.
I don't think an effect will cop that kind of balls out tone, you need a saturated tube output stage.
Has anybody asked the bassist what he's using?

I could be wrong, but it sounds like the signal has been split, with one side distorted and trebley, and the other maybe slightly overdriven with the treble cut out after the OD. I'd say for sure the strings are round wound, and the slightly overdriven channel is run from the neck pickup. The distorted channel may be comming from the bridge pickup, but I can't tell for sure.

In the Rumors of War vid posted above, you can see that it's Jeff's Laney Klipp (which they talk about in the studio session videos) sitting on top of a newer black SVT. I'm guessing he's using the SVT for the lows and oomph and the 100w Klipp through a different cab to add some nice midrange grind.

Either that or they just set up their cool looking stuff for the video. I know Matt did use the Klipp for some guitar parts on the last album.
