I'm an older guy (late 40's) that just bought a Ibanez Mikro to learn on and hoping the shorter scale will be a little easier for me to get around on. My son is a guitar player and singer in a Rock? band called Clubhouse for Ivy. I lean toward classic rock and have always wanted to step in and play the BTO song named " Not Fragile" with Fred Turner. I've been practicing every day for 30-45 min. and have made some progress on the major scale as well as some pentatonic stuff but I am still battling the fingers for control. I am having a hard time going thru scale proggressions over and over again without getting bored or pissed off at my uncooperative hands. It's only been a couple of weeks so I'll just keep at it and if it comes-it comes. I look forward to the day that I can lay down a bass line for my son to play a Real Rock n Roll tune. I'm learning alot in these forums to help me along and am very appreciative of all of your contributions.

Welcome! I've been here a couple of years. It's a nice place, a site I check every single day. Seems to be mostly youngsters, but there are quite a few old coots like us around.
If you are like me, you'll learn a lot here. Folks are friendly, and generally don't mind answering any newbie questions, provided you have used the search engine to make sure there aren't already 30 threads on the same issue.

I too have passed the 40 border and only recently picked up the bass; I've seen people over sixty starting on the bass - so *anything* is possible.
Going through scales can be a pain - what I did was try and make it sound good - almost like a song. If I'm practicing a C major scale I try and find music that plays in that key and then I go and fiddle along with my bass. Or if I'm impatient; any kind of music as long as I keep in time and rhythm ... a far better bass player than me once told me it's more important to be in time and find a good groove rather than be in key.
And it does make practice those scales a whole lot more fun.

I'm an older guy myself (45) in Spring. Give it time, it will all become smoother with time. I find that I have the most fun playing tunes (either learning new ones or remembering older ones on the setlist) during my limited practice time.
