HPF/LPF - how and where do they fit in?


Looks good and it's a booster too! I'd buy one on the spot but it's only sold as kit...

That is quite good. Lookin the price phenomenal good. But it's a kit. They have also mini LPF or HPF.

I'm building one at the moment. If anyone does buy one, I strongly recommend purchasing the enclosure at the same time. It seems to be a size that we don't really have in the UK. IO didn't buy one thinking the ones I had hanging around would work, but they're a tad too small to work with the template, and I don't fancy drilling the holes myself. But you can't complete the pedal without the enclosure (easily), so buy it!

Probably also a dumb question, but how do these differ from just turning bass or treble down in eq or amp? I'm guessing maybe they're a hard cutoff at some frequency?

I'm simplifying a little, but the basics is that the bass control on your amp is set to a fixed frequency and rolling the knob controls how much +/- gain is applied at that frequency. Obviously it is a frequency spread on a gradient but roughly speaking, fixed frequency, you control the +/- via the knob.

With a HPF, the amount of -gain is fixed at n db per octave. The knob controls the frequency at which the fixed amount of gain is applied to.

Again I'm simplifying because there are gradients and frequency centres and spreads. Someone will probably come along and fix this up for me shortly :)

Long story shortened and simplified:

Bass control on amp = fixed frequency, adjustable +/- gain via knob
HPF = fixed -gain, adjustable frequency via the knob

The way I gig, I would find it very difficult to lose my HPF. If it matters, I have the Broughton Always On HPF.

For sure get the predrilled enclosure...its something like $10. The time saved drilling is 100% worth it.

Definitely want that HPF to go first. That way you don't get an octaver, or a compressor, or an envelope filter triggering off of extreme low end. It's the first thing that I plug into on my board. The LPF comes much later in the chain- I use the LPF either as an outboard tone knob, or to keep fuzz out of the house PA horns and tweeters (because I think fuzz sounds awful when not through anything but a speaker).

I also have one in the effects loop of my SWR SM-400s, and it stays with that amp.
I have had a love affair going on 30 years with my SM-400s ,I can't say enough about it.I am interested in purchasing a Broughton lf-hfo pedal.I guess you have 2.Where do you suggest placing one? On the FX pedal board or the SWR loop?

Is a HPF or LPF important across all genres and styles of music? I don't have one and have never used one but it sounds important based on reading the comments above. Am I correct in thinking that it's mainly for FOH sound and not so much for stage sound? Is it like having a compressor where the difference between on/off is fairly subtle (to me at least)?
 
the HPF is a nice thing to have. It becomes necessary when you play 5 string or in a low tuning because those very low frequency can add a lot of mud to your signal. If you are not a very busy player and play in standard tuning, you might not even notice that you need one.

I use the always on HPF in the effects loop with that amp because it was built without any real high pass filtering and will try to amplify very low frequencies. With the HPF that amp will sound louder because the power amp section won't use power to amplify sub audible frequencies.

I still have an always on HPF and a LPF on my pedal board. I tend to go ampless these days though. My SWR rig is a backup to my Aguilar rig, which is a backup to my IEM rig.

SWR 350 and a Super Redhead over here. I have te Broughton LF-HF pedal and I use it before the signal enters the amp, so every unnecessary signal is out of the equation.

I use the Alembic SF-2 Superfilter. It consists of two filters, each of which can be selected hpf, lpf or bandpass. Each filter has gain control, frequency selection knob and damping (Q) control (this boosts the selected frequency). Additionally there is gain control for unfiltered signal. It is quite versatile.

I have it configured as one hpf and one lpf. The hpf frequency is about 80 and the lpf is about 680. I have the Q control slightly higher on the lpf than the hpf. I have the direct unfiltered signal gain at 0.

The output goes directly to the input of the amp. It is very nice.

I would recommend both hpf and lpf, with selectable frequency and also Q control. The Q control makes the bass sing.

I recorded our big band gig this weekend, with a Tascam DR-40X sitting on the stage. If you are interested, I will post a clip.

This is kinda correct - the real issue isn't that low frequencies themselves add "mud", but that putting low frequencies through speakers that can't handle them creates odd harmonics, which are heard as mud.

If you're playing though very capable PA's (lots of tour grade subwoofers), a high pass filter set really low - say 20 Hz, helps get rid of subsonic signals (when you pull on a string before you release it, there is subsonic content there) that can use up power in the PA, but you don't need to roll off the actual intended signal of that bass - down to 31 Hz-ish for a low B on a 5'er.

If you're playing through a bass amp, then you need to set your high pass considerably higher - as odd as it seems, bass guitar cabinets don't work down to the lowest frequencies that our instruments put out - they're designed to be small and efficient, which means they give up those lowest notes. And yes, I mean 4 or 5 string basses - 41 Hz (low E on a 4) is below what bass guitar cabinets do well at decent power. Where you need to set your high pass in those situations depends on your gear (including the bass), and how loud you play.

One of the secrets of bass gear is that bass amps all have high pass filters in them. There was one exception - Acoustic made a line of "DC coupled" amps many years ago, that quickly vanished from the market - every note you played, the speakers jumped from the transient, and they didn't get very loud at all without clipping, because they didn't have a high pass filter in them. Anyway, Whether or not the filter in your amp is set where it needs to be for you is a good question.
