Humidity conditions where I live are horrible for instruments.
I keep a hygrometer in my music room which is located in my basement... without help from a humidifier, humidity will drop as low as 15% in the mid-winter months when it's too cold to have much moisture in the air and the central heating is constantly running, drying things out even further. It gets as high as 55-60% in the Summer, but having central AC keeps it in check... usually hovers right around 50%, which is perfect.
I use a Venta LW25 humidifier with distilled water in my music room all winter to keep it up to 45-55%... it's only about a 150 sq foot room, and the Venta can even have trouble keeping up in the middle of January or February.
If it gets too dry or the Venta can't keep up, I'll pop the door open while my girls take a bath in the bathroom next to my music room. That helps.
