HX One vs Lizzard King vs Big Muff

A little background on where i'm at since this is a pretty specific question. I play in a cover band mostly Misfits, Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Muse, amongst other.

My current rig is:
- Jazz bass (with quarter pounders) -> tuner, Digitech Drop, EHX tone corset comp, Alpha/Omega Photon -> Mesa D800 -> Ampeg 4x10

For Nine Inch Nails (the hand that feeds) and Muse (Hysteria) I need a fuzz pedal since the distortion on the Photon is too tight(?) to sound right for those songs.

So I was planning on getting a Lizzard King Octave Fuzz since I saw Dave Navarro's video and it looks pretty impressive and kind of what I'm looking for. I think the big muff would probably do what I need for a lower price tag as well.

While I was researching this I found out about the Line 6 HX One, and that will have several Fuzz settings. Being in a cover band as we rotate songs it would be a good thing to have and wanted to get thoughts from this group. Its slightly more expensive than the Lizzard King (like $50 more).

If I had to redo my pedalboard from scratch Id probably do:
- Tuner, Drop, Cali comp, Darkglass b7k, HX stomp, DI pedal
But changing to that now would be a significant investment and would need to sell some of my current gear to fund it.

I've only started to dabble in the fuzzes in the HX One so I am not much help there. But, how often are you using the Drop pedal? Is it all the time or just for some songs? If it is just for a few songs, and you don't need any of the other effects in HX One, you can use the Poly Capo in HX One. It sounds better than the Drop to me. If it is used a lot for downtuned songs, nevermind.

The Dark Dove fuzz on the Helix actually sounds really good, and you can use the global noise gate with it to keep the noise/feedback in check. As mentioned above, the Helix line does pitch shifting quite well, so as long as you don’t need to run your Drop into the fuzz, you could replace that functionality with the HX One, as well.

Also, with the HX One, you could put your compressor in the loop, and have it be before or after the effect the HX is providing, and that can be varied per preset.

Based on my experience with the Digitech Drop, I would trade the HX One and the Drop for an HX Stomp.

One of the artists I work with requests that we all tune down 1/2-step. I didn’t like the way my bass played when tuned down, so I tried the Drop. That didn’t work out at all me, so I traded it for the Stomp. The Stomp works for this need very, very well.
Actually, the HX One would be all I need. But I’ve using the Stomp for a few months now and I don’t want to change now. The down tuning is the only purpose that I need the Stomp for. Kinda overkill, but I’m happy.

I didn't know HX had a drop pedal in it, and seems most are recommending the HX one.

Now I'm kind of thinking I should just get a stomp and sell everything. Would save $400 basically

HX stomp (new) - $649
- HX one (new) - $299
- DigiTech drop - $200
- tone corset - $65
- dark glass photon - $350
- bigger pedalboard - $150

Total (415$)

The pitch shifter in the HX is significantly better than the Drop pedal.

Highly recommend selling the Drop, and a few of your other pedals if needed, and picking up a Stomp.

Ian Martin Allison also sells really affordable preset packs for the Stomp that sound brilliant and cover a lot of the tones you’re after.

I have an HX ONE and I basically use the Ampeg Liquifier, I use Tremolo and I use Octaver. The pedal sounds fantastic and is easy to use. Most of the effects have Blend control and sound good with the bass.

I started using the Liquifier model on a few songs. The way I set it when I was trying it out, it actually gets just a little bit of light breakup in it and it sounds really good. I wonder if the pedal does that?

Don’t rush to sell your compressor, if you pick up the Stomp. Compressors are a weak point within the Helix line, and you need to at least see if you can be satisfied with them before committing.
