HX Stomp / modeler users, do you run cab sim to your amp?

I recently got myself an HX Stomp, and I'm loving it so far. During rehearsals and gigs at smaller venues, I run my pedalboard straight into the mixer. One of the reasons I got the HX Stomp is so that I can blend the sound of a mic'd cabinet in with my direct signal that I send to the mixer (I run sound for the band too). It sounds great in the IEM's with some cab simulation.

I also use my own amp and cabinet(s) when playing in larger rooms so that I can hear the low end more clearly and feel some rumble on the stage. I'm curious whether those of you that run a modeler AND use an amp send the fully-processed signal, including the cab sim, to your amp? Or do you have a send somewhere before the cab simulator? I'm guessing it might not make a big difference up on stage, but sending an SVT 8x10 simulation into my Genzler 1x15 seems kind of silly. Or does it?

Yes - Cab sim into a cab is redundant and silly.

Some people like the sound of it and so try not to yuck ones yum but it still is a bit silly but so are 5 preamps with tone stacks in a row but some of us do that too - with pleasing results.

Would you mic an amp with an 8x10 and then run that signal into an amp with a 1x15? That’s effectively what you’re doing with cab sim into a cab.

If it sounds good, it is good. Do whatever your ears like. Think of it as an effect. You can change it for different songs or turn it off.

Co-signed. Doesn’t make sense to me to do this. Likely, you’d end up tweaking your eq to compensate for the high end roll off and the other eq effects that the multiple cabs would add, effectively muddying your tone and causing unnecessary frequency clashing and phasing.

I was running amp and cab sims from my Stomp into a QSC K12.2.
I recently acquired a TT-800 and a couple Mesa cabs. I have yet to run any sims into the TT, though I wouldn't rule it out.

I don’t always use the cab sims even when ampless, I love the amp models and effects but I haven’t found a cab sim that I’m in love with yet.

I vote if it sounds good, it is good. Because it's true.

I used to run my Stomp into backline amps without disabling the cab sim. Now, I no longer use cab sims (unless it's built into a pedal, in which case it's just a low pass filter). In either case, I just EQ the amp if I'm not happy with its sound.

Never. I also don't use a cab sim when ampless.
I've seen some demos of folks doing it in a parallel path but personally, I find it pointless.

I wouldn't use the cab sim into a real amp/cab. I do love the sound of my preamp pedal + amp/cab sim into my band's PA, going direct and using IEMs.

I think many folks split the signal into two paths with separate outputs so they can have:

One hx stomp output with the amp and cab sims going into a desk.

One hx stomp outputs without the amp and cab sims going into their amp.

I do not. I generally only use my stomp and or quad cortex with an amp and cab setup. I never use a cab sim. It doesn't sound or feel right in the slightest to my ears. Any time I've tried adding a cab sim or IR, it sounds like kaka. Even on the very few instances I've tried them with a mixing board in a recording situation without an amp or cab, it didn't sound right to me. Maybe I'm using them incorrectly or not setting them the right way, but I was never a fan.

I'd echo what others have said. If it sounds good, then by all means, but I would keep my send to the amp separate from any cab sims or IRs.

Also of note, be sure and try other IRs in your HXS. I found all of the included ones to sound pretty bad for my taste. I grabbed the ones offered for free, with optional donation, off of the Shift Line website. Their Heritage 810 and EBS 410 models in particular always worked quite well for me and are definitely worth a look. It's also not hard to capture your own IRs if you have a good sounding room and a suitable microphone.

I thought about buying one of his preset packs. Which do you like the most?

I don't, even though I play direct because it just adds mud live. Maybe it would sound good for recording, but I would turn the cab mix down to like 20% because 100% is really obviously too much imho.

The IMA presets weren't really worth it to me considering the cost (I bought one of the packs). Ymmv though.

I use the SVT A/B. They are all pretty good, just the SVT sound is so classic it’s hard to beat.

“Sounds good, is good” is the only rule that matters.

That being said, sending complete bass tone signal chain that you like the sound of through full range IEM’s into an another cab is very likely not going to send good to you anymore.

There should be a way to route that same signal pre-IR into your amp onstage in the HX though.
