Hydrive 112 Power Handling - Did I Goof?

My cab that blew the crossover started smelling with the same head. That's not the amp that blew it but there were warning signs with an amp that should be a good match.

forgot to multi-quote, sorry. yeah, the Mb500 is astonishingly loud. With the same volume/gain settings that made the 112 stink (gain at 2, master volume at 5) I plugged it into an SVT 810 and had to turn down the so as not to overpower two 5150s into 4x12s.

It’s only 500 watts in the same way that a Mark IV Toyota Supra twin turbo was only 276 horsepower.

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve been taking my home audio speakers to Jamac for as long as I can remember, as did my father. If the crossover is cooked, I’ll take it to Arcane on Hawthorne, but if the driver needs to be re-coned I’ll take it to Jamac for sure.

Ended up finding a GK 410 Neo - rated for 800W and only slightly bigger and heavier than the Hartke - for $200 at a local shop, gonna go pick it up tomorrow assuming nobody walked off with it today.

1. I wonder if reconing would change how it sounds, what with the hybrid aluminum/kevlar-treated paper cone Hartke uses.
2. Good gracious that's a steal for that GK cab!

It's nuts! Even running at 8 ohms (so 350 watts) it's crazy loud!

Jamac has a very strong reputation for doing exactly that. I haven't had a need to deal with them personally, but one of the principals in a very well known but now defunct Portland pro sound dealership ended up there after his shop closed up several years ago. That shop was my go-to for a couple of decades, it was absolutely ace.

Sold them because of the weight. The LH500 was 42 lbs. My Mesa WD800 is 7 lbs, and the Subway 15 I can lift no problem. Other than that the Hartke's were workhorses.

Well, two bits of good news.

One, it looks like it was just a close call - I've opened the amp and there is no visible damage to the speaker itself nor the crossover, and when plugging a lower wattage (150W) amp into it it sounds totally fine. I'm gonna have a pro look it over beforehand, but I think I'm in the clear to sell it with a clear conscience.

Two, I picked up that 410 NEO and it weighs about the same as the Hydrive. The MB500 looks very funny on top of a 410.
