I’m Retiring

That is because they just fired the last one.
That is awesome, Charlie! Except for the health meltdown. But yes, I will have no problem avoiding vehicles that go up in the air from here on out!Word. I retired from active gigging in 2018 and have zero regret. I'm quite sure my health meltdown last year would've been terminal if I had still been living that life, had I even made it to last year. Avoid helicopter rides, just sayin'.
Yes sir, so far I've taken to two new instruments, with plans to add at least one more. I still get out to a few jams and open mics each month and if and when it's on bass I smile a lot more now. If it's on acoustic guitar and lead vocals with pro backup, maybe even more so.

Jimmy, I’m just now seeing this my friend. We all retire at some point. Glad you’re doing it on your terms! If I ever make it out from California to North Carolina I’ll look you up!! You’ll be easy to find with all the cats!!I love playing music, but I hate everything else involved. The driving, the flying, and especially dictator bandleaders with hair trigger tempers who pretend to have your best interests at heart, like the leader of the oldies band I was with for 20 years, Rocky and the Rollers. Horrible name, very angry person.
Two years ago I moved from Orlando to a small town in NC, and I have been threatening to get back out. But if I did, the drives for finding quality work would always be at least an hour, and mostly more. And no matter how quality the work is, it ends up being minimum wage with the driving. And I have no desire to fly at all anymore because the math works out to way less than minimum wage. Working at Piggly Wiggly a mile away pays better in the long run…not that I’m doing that
But the main reason is because sitting at home doing my own thing and relearning the drums is a lot more rewarding than being bossed around by cranky old farts. And let’s face it…music is a young person’s game unless you’re an old rock star.
So I’m retiring unless I get a great offer from the nicest people on earth and get paid much better than I did before. That means I’m retiring.
Swore I’d never retire, but I haven’t played in 2 years and don’t miss it. What I do love, however, is my new role as the town crazy cat lady. I have a lot of competition here, but a half grown kitten dropped 5 babies on my front porch last week out of nowhere, and I’m having way more fun than I have in a long time.
Giving up music will never be in the cards for me, but retirement can be pretty badass!

Not to worry; I have a dog that chases cars but, if he catches it, he can't drive it. Plymouth NC is a really nice place and one of the most affordable areas between northern Georgia and the Virginia line.

One of my recurring nightmare memories stems from me taking U.S. Route 1 from north of DC to Philadelphia. I had no sooner crossed the line into Pennsylvania than I was greeted by a succession of BBQ places also offering country music.
Years ago I used to drive a truck for work and one of the places I drove to was East Texas. You definitely start seeing ads for BBQ places when you get into Texas. One of them advertised so much that I stopped for lunch...first time I ever had brisket.
The biggest disappointments of my semi-rural Pennsylvania dining experience is that the toast suggests 1/4 inch thick 40 grit sandpaper and the principal sides are applesauce and cole slaw. For a southern boy raised on fries and baked beans, this is a devastating experience.

Well, I assumed Rii would understand my weird sense of humor since it looks like his is far more advanced than mine. If his dog chases cars I can only assume he doesn't like the mailman, either. Better skip the snail mail invitations to the party that isn't happening. The party thing was a touch of a joke, too, but there is nothing wrong with a little celebration... not of the end, but what you've done so far. I retired almost two years ago ...and yet I think in these last six months I've had more gigs than I did in the previous two, three, maybe even five years!
The difference now is that, since I'm "retired" I don't have to take any/every gig that comes along...I can pick & choose and only accept the gigs that sound like fun. It's been absolutely liberating.
Yeah, don't stop playing music...but do stop working for a living. So long as your assets are in place, retirement is highly under-rated.
