So, a few months ago I bought one of the new 64 Epiphone Thunderbirds in Inverness Green. Weight is about 9 pounds, replaced the tuners with Hipshot Ultralites, put a little weight in the control cavity and moved the strap pins, great balance. The only thing that could have made me happier with this purchase is if I was able to find out what type of strings were on it. Long story longer, I saw Gibson strings on some website and figured I would take a chance. I am really happy with the depth of the D and G strings on the tbird. I have used DR strings for 30 years and really like them, but the D and G always seemed a little too thin sounding, I typically use the 45 to 100 gauges. So any who, I bought a set, they were only $20 so I figured I would take a flyer, I bought the 50 to 105 set. Received them yesterday. The question then became, is the sound of the D and G due to the strings or is it due to the pickups?
I don't have an answer yet, I debated last night about what type of bass to put them on and I think I have concluded that they will be going on a Jazz. This particular bass requires strings with a little bit higher tension than my round core DR's, the tension on the truss rod is nearly nothing with DR's. So, a higher tension string lets me tighten up the truss a little bit and makes the setup better. It has Nordstrand hum cancelling pickups which sound fantastic, but the bass doesn't get any use because of the neck issue. So, hoping these strings will fix that, we shall see.
