I have written before that I do not agree about the performance of the C4. When getting below C or B, mine starts generating an octave down, that is a half step too low. Play a B, get a -Bb in the low octave. Happens on different basses. Has occasionally happened in some patch in my FI as well, but rarely.
My Digitech BSW never does that, and obviously the analogue EBS OctaBass delivers the right note, haha.
For both the C4 and FI, it seems a smooth HPF is gradually limiting the low frequency content below B or Bb. EBS and BSW definitely sound to push more clean sub 30 Hz amplitude.
And the latency in the digital pedals might be noted, a non issue in analogue ones.

Oh wow, so many responses... I am sorry guys, I posted my question and then more serious, reallife issues bound my attention for while. Nevertheless, thank you all for all your suggestions.

Hi guys,

With new band and new style of music come new desires. I want to add an octaver to my board. In the past I just toyed with cheap ones (e.g. Behringer) and was not particularly impressed. But I want to give it a new shot.
Now I know from the past that the EBS octaver was much praised pedal. Want I am looking for is a pedal that is not specifically sterile, it very much may have a thing going on. And, and this is important, I wonder if there are octavers that have an adjustable lower limit where the pedal stops octaving? Because, octaving a low E or even low B makes no real sense. And, as cherry on top, are there octavers that may even octave UP and Down?

I use the source audio c4. Tracks well and I can get a lot of different sounds out of it. Can’t see myself replacing it unless they come out with a newer version with more features or something. It does a pretty nice job of mimicking a lot of the other octave pedals on the market. I’m not a huge envelope filter user but it’s cool to be able to use the c4 as a filter also.

Allright, I went through all your suggestions
- The C4: It might be the best option, but also the most expensive one. For what I intend to do, it's just out of the question.
- EHX Nano Pog: Sounds interesting, bit on the expensive side, too. But simple and well done
- Boss OC-5: Cannot say why, but it's not my cup of tea
- MXR M288: An option to look at
- EBS Octabass: Good pedal, but boring...
- Laney BCC 85: I will try this one first. I have only small parts in the set where I need the octaver, and I want the octaver to sound "different"(??) - I have a feeling that this pedal does exactly what I want
