Well, today is a sad day!

Was playing a gig, just using my walkabout scout 12", have full PA support and my own wedges so its really not being pushed that hard! (gain around 10 o'clock, maser 11)

Play the two sets ok, start the last song and loose all my volume!

Thankfully the DI out was still working!

Finish the gig, dont manage to make it make a sound! Since it was pretty hot i thought it might have gone it thermal protection (had it happen once before)!

Now, i just got home, still no sound! Swapped the speaker with the one from my Walkabout scout extension and it works!

I dont understand how i blew my speaker but i did!

Now i have to find a new one in the UK which shouldnt be fun...

Actually could be easy

Would be nice to get a honest answer from Mesa Boogie and just tell us what neo speaker they use in the 1x12

I could only take a wild guess that its a Eminence S2012

you could just buy one from a Eminence UK distributor

might be cheaper than buying on from Boogie since who knows what crazy mark up and shipping cost you would pay.

would be much easier to buy the speaker from a local shop that might have one setting on the shelf. and you could just pick it up

not much airspace in that cabinet the speaker might be rated at 300 watts but the displacement limit is more like 125 to 150 watts. so it seems it would be rather easy to blow that thing.

I checked the Eminence S2012 and it doesnt look like its the right one!

If any speaker guru knows what speaker is used i would really like to know!

Mesa isnt of much help when you are oversea! The mesa warranty doesnt even apply apart from the one year with the seller!


Actually, would an eminence kappalite work? I know its not the right speaker but if it works with the box tuning it should be a lot tougher wouldnt it?

My advice: never try and remove your own appendix:D. Take it to someone with some expertise. It could be many things. You don't want to replace the driver only to find it's a problem elsewhere.

As i said in a previous post, i swapped the speaker with an identical one from my 12" scout extension and everything works fine!

I dont see what else the problem could be!

I even tried the fried speaker in the extension cabinet just to make sure it wasnt something in the crossover or something in the cabinet wiring and it still didnt work!
The amp works fine both with the new speaker and my barefaced cabinet!

The only thing it can be is a blown/defective speaker no?

Just curious here, was the speaker 4 ohm ? Walkabout users usually say to use the 8 ohm 12, because the 4 ohm version cannot handle the 300 watts.

That sounds like a pretty good diagnosis. You can test the blown speaker with a 9 V battery. It will make a noticeable "click" when you temporarily connect the battery, if the voice coil is conducting. Now take a close look at the wires coming to the terminal strip on the driver. I've seen where one of those wires came disconnected.

I just did the battery test and nothing!

The portion of the leads that i can see look good!

I guess its dead!

Would a recone be a good idea! I find that scary and would rather go for new but then its only a couple years old!

ps: speakers is the 4 ohms

usually the voice coil burns out, and you cant see it because its in the magnetic gap. if you tested it with a battery and meter, its blown for sure. tear it apart and pull out the voice coil and have a look. it will probably be dark brown/burnt in one area.

If you replace it, I'd strongly suggest using an 8 ohm replacement. The 4 ohm Scout is a bad idea from the start, and proves that even a top notch builder like Mesa can still be ignorant to real world experience. The 4 ohm Scout CANNOT handle the WA's 300 watts. Not even close. I sold my 4 ohm Scout shortly after buying it. LOVE the amp, but it needs more than a 4 ohm 12" spkr can provide.

You should really look into the broken wire suggestion before replacement. I haven't had time to look into the WA's power amp circuitry but because you were running it under what I would consider normal conditions I'd look into if it is biased properly. You'll need a tech to do it. The problem may be an internal amp setup problem that could possibly blow your replacement speaker as well.

The WA doesnt have power tube, doesnt need biasing...

No broken wires to be found!

Sorry, my bad. Yep, if a speaker swap solves it, you have your diagnosis. Mesa repl speakers are 129 +shipping in the US (pm me if you can't get one in the IK).
