SS amps STILL have bias adjustments. Surprise! Most modern amps should go into protect though if the DC offset goes too high.

Speakers can fail with no outside clues or for no seemingly good reason. They are electro mechanical devices (thankfully rare).

Indeed! Like I said, I haven't looked at the circuit but it's possible there was a failure with the protection circuit and the bias got thrown out enough to heat the whole thing up even before the first note was played. The speaker would be very susceptible to pure dc through the coil. It most likely was just a bum speaker but i'm just trying to provide a look from another angle just in case the next speaker blows prematurely.

Actually as a test you could turn on your amp with no bass plugged in and bring up the master to 9:00 and wait 1/2 hr then feel if the air being expelled from the bottom and top vents is hot. It should remain cool with no input signal.

Amp has been on for 25min with both gain and master at 12 and 9 and is perfectly cool!

Does that rule out the bias problem?

JK it is a good indication, would be more comfortable with some measurements. At least the output is not running hot.

No, dont have one, but i did put a 9v battery on both terminals and it doesnt click!

I guess it proves the same point doesnt it?

In my mind it's more likely to be not enough speaker area to play the gig. Even with PA support a single 12 isn't all that much.

I might have thought the same if I didn't know the amp well. Although the OP didn't quote what his EQ settings were, his gain settings of 10 o'clock on the pre and 11 o'clock on the master aren't abusive even for the stock 4 Ohm 12" scout cab. I have on many occasions ran mine harder with my active FBass and noticed no speaker stressing... at least not audibly.

Well, i got in touch with the boogie importer in the UK and my replacement speaker is going to cost me £219!!

Thats $359!!! More than 3 times the US price!

Would a recone be a good idea! I find that scary and would rather go for new but then its only a couple years old!

Find a good recone tech in your local area. Ask around with fellow musicians. A good recone is as good as new.

The 4 ohm Scout is a bad idea from the start, and proves that even a top notch builder like Mesa can still be ignorant to real world experience.

Apparently so...loading a combo amp with a speaker that cannot handle the amp's full power just seems like a huge design flaw.

Well, today is a sad day!

Was playing a gig, just using my walkabout scout 12", have full PA support and my own wedges so its really not being pushed that hard! (gain around 10 o'clock, maser 11)

Play the two sets ok, start the last song and loose all my volume!

Thankfully the DI out was still working!

Finish the gig, dont manage to make it make a sound! Since it was pretty hot i thought it might have gone it thermal protection (had it happen once before)!

Now, i just got home, still no sound! Swapped the speaker with the one from my Walkabout scout extension and it works!

I dont understand how i blew my speaker but i did!

Now i have to find a new one in the UK which shouldnt be fun...

i did the same on my Boogie WAS12 .... replaced it with a top o the line EV with a cast basket and it wallops with as much juice as you can pour into it.
