I bought a Ric on sale from MF. A bit perplexed. Thoughts?

Was it some sort of special deal, or is that simply their price for a new 4003? If it's their price for a new Ric, it seems to me that you wouldn't be out of line wanting it to be in perfect, new condition. If it was discounted because of the blemish, that's a whole other story.

It's inevitable that whatever we play a lot will get worn and scratched, but that's no reason to accept a new bass that's already got a finish flaw on it.

They are "On Sale" through MF. No mention of 'Dent & Scratch' or anything like that.

Still... $1399 for a brand new Ric isn't a bad deal at all.

I'll keep you all updated as I get more info.

+1

There's nothing wrong with shipping a bass single boxed. In fact, if I ordered a new bass with a HSC, I would expect nothing more.

This isn't a problem with single-boxing and the case, It's that Ric bridges can have "burrs" in them and create a pressure point on the finish that, eventually, makes the 'bubbling' you see in that picture.

Check your manufacture date, and give Ric a call.

I'm reminded of the scene in "The World According To Garp" where they are out house shopping, and as they are standing looking at a prospective house from the curb, a plane crashes into it. He immediately declares that they will take the house. Why? Because it's "pre-disastered". What are the odds of it being destroyed again?

Enjoy your bass, live with the slight imperfection. It's just going to get worn in over time anyway, this way you don't have to live in constant fear of "that first scratch". :)

I had a neighbor who would buy a new car and take a ball peen hammer and put a small dent in it. When I asked him why he did that, he replied..."My kids are going to do it anyway. Now I don't have to freak out about it when it happens."

I have never worried about minor imperfections in anything. Just think how mad you'll be when you put that first ding in it. Now, you don't have to go through that!

Great bass. Enjoy.

I can't even tell what I'm looking for.

No kidding I see the bridge like reflecting back and thats it. I wouldnt send it back as its likely if that bugs you then you will find something on every single one. As for MF dealing, previously they had only the blue ones for $1300 many got them for $1100 with a coupon, 3 months after the sale was over I brought it up to a rep and a few days later I had a mapleglo rick 4003 at my door for $1080, still have it.

I dont think MF ever has a shortage of ricks, I think the opposite.

Just to be clear, I am totally leaning towards keeping it. It plays nice (needs only slight adjustments) and I am sure it'll sound great through my rig.

I really just wanted opinions, and to make sure it was purely a cosmetic issue.

I mean, that's what a forum is all about, amirite?

Yeah, sometimes it's hard to be objective about something like this. It helps to get some perspective on it.

Go play and dance around with it. Then when you nail the TV with the headstock and put a small dent in the finish, you'll be good to go live with it. ;)

Congrats on a gorgeous bass she looks killer.I would send it back and get another one and don't feel guilty about the deal you got that's the price of business and they make it up selling $50.00 cables trust me their doing just fine wait for the call from your rep and get another or see if they will give you a refund that spot could be polished out.

Well, here's the thing:

1. Rickenbacker, unlike other manufacturers, dates the warranty from the date of manufacture, not the date of sale. So, if this bass sat in MF's warehouse for 15 months, your warranty has expired, and exchanging it for another one from MF is your only real recourse. Unless, of course, you want to keep this one.

2. Run your serial number to see when it was made. RickResource.com is a good place to do that. That will tell you if there is any warranty left. It will also tell you if it is one of the notorious 2011 JetGlos, which had problems with the finish cracking off around the tailpiece. Lots of (understandably) angry posts on the Rick Club forum about that, and IIRC, most all of them came from MF buyers. They must have had a ton of them in the warehouse, and whether or not it was the result of a bad paint job, poor quality control, or gremlins, sitting around in a cold/hot/cold/hot warehouse for a couple of years doesn't do anything good for a finish.

In any case, it's up to you whether you decide to keep it or not. Hopefully, it's just a smudge or something that will polish out. If it is one of the Ricks that they had problems with, and it is a crack in the finish, be aware that it could get a lot worse in the future. Good luck, whatever you decide! :)

Now, THIS is one of great things about coming to TB. Seriously helpful post.
