My father had one of those in new condition that sat in a closet the whole time I was growing up. I never played it because I thought, when I was younger, it wasn't "cool". A few years ago, while at his house, I went to that closet to check it out but he had sold it in a yardsale to a neighborhood kid for $30. He had no idea where the kid lived so I couldn't repurchase it......Still makes me sick thinking about it.

How does the Hagstrom pickup on the Guild compare to your bass with the Dark Star?

it's hard to say because i don't have the DS'd guild anymore. also the pickups are in different positions and the construction of both instruments are very different.
I will say that the starfire is a bit quieter but the tone is 10x better (which i would have never thought possible).
I wouldn't account that all to the pickup though. I would imagine the better construction is key.
I'd say fred hammon easily has 95% of the hagstrom sound in his darkstars. of course the extra magnet gives you a little extra output.

Yea, I guess I'll stop telling the story but this thread reminded me of it once more. My dad is sure getting tired of me bringing it up at every Thanksgiving dinner.
