I've got 500 bucks to spend on my first ever bass and bass amp (I'm switching over from guitar, but I'm still not very knowledgeable) and I've made two lists, I just need to know which one would be better quality (Don't worry about the like... Educational books and stuff)

I wouldn't know what I'd like, I've never owned or played a bass in my life . I'm just concerned about sound quality for like... Rock/Metal.

First off....welcome to Talk Bass and the addiction that is Bass

The best advice i can give you is this....go to a store and play everything in your price range, and pick the bass that feels, sounds, and looks the best to you (In that order)...no matter how good a bass looks, if it plays and sounds like crap your probably not going to want to play it....also take somebody with you that has a some experience if possible to help you out...

also buying new is great, but you will get a lot more for your money by buying used....there are a lot of players out there that have stepped up and or traded off some really nice gear in favor of new G.A.S.

books and videos are ok, but its better to invest in a few lessons right out of the gate so you don't develop bad habits that might inhibit you learning curve down the line...

that said check out www.rondomusic.com SX basses are fairly nice especially for the price...also the Fender Squier Vintage Modified line is also a great bang for the buck new AND EVEN BETTER USED...

I would never recommend an SX over a Traben. Shame on you. LOL! Just kidding.

But yeah, definitely check out the the Squier Vintage Modified line of basses as well as their Classic Vibe basses. Definitely worth more than the asking prices on them.

This is just my oppionion so it means nothing but how about some older USA peavey. If you can't find any or just don't like them I would suggest you check out the squier VM.

traben...im not sure which one the array model is but i played one with a pretty nice spalted maple top once. It's a nice and lightweight bass. Probably better quality than the thunderbird. I would recomond a more versatile bass though like a fender jazz or something. Squire has some jazz basses that are aparently great quality for the money.

Oh and to add to that, in case you didn't know...the jazz bass isn't just for jazz. it should work great in any rock/metal setting

I know. it's ironic how alot of rock artists use j-basses and alot of jazz artists use p-basses.

i thing you need a fender copy as your first, I suggest an Austin do to the cost and how much i still use mine
