I can't understand Beck's lyrics.

Perhaps that was a statement about trying to find meaning in Beck's zany lyrics, rather than a jab at the OP? So in trying to point out the stupidity of others, maybe you kind of just pointed out your own? Just saying, maybe you should be quicker to ask someone to clarify what they were talking about before you go getting offended and huffy on someone else's behalf?

There's also a lot of pop culture references involved that unless you're a product of 70's/80's/90's America or have done extensive studying of the culture, you'd probably miss, or at the least find confusing.

+1 to all this... lyrically, at least in my opinion, Beck seems to be a pretty good example of the whole "wayward Gen-Xers raised on populat culture" thing. All in all, there's usually so much interesting stuff going on musically, I find that his lyrics tend to take a back seat.... except for Sea Change, maybe.

Either way, Beck's pretty rad!

TY. The OP asked a question: try to understand, or give up. My response : give up. Most of Beck`s lyrics are nonsensical. How he interpreted that as a jab, I have no idea. But his statement speaks for itself: " yer" stupid. Lolol

Sorry I came out swingin'...musta needed a cuppa coffee or something....
Seriously though, "give up" with no explanation sat to WHY isn't real helpful is it? (and don't pm me over dumb crap like this...it got deleted unread, ok?)

And for the record Beck is a second gen Scientologist and a lot of his lyrics are not intended to be understood on a conscious level. They're far from being "nonsense" though.

I listen to a lot of Rammstein and while I understand the translations of many of the songs and get "the gist" of them, the deeper meanings and inclinations are still lost because I am not as aware of the symbolism and underlying ideas behind the german language as a native speaker is. So a lot of what I think a song is about turns out not to be.

In order to improve I take in a lot of german movies and literature and try to get a better idea of how the language is used, and how that works with the lyrics of the songs I like listening to.

I find the vast majority of all popular music's lyrics to be either utter nonsense or vapid attempts at poesy. It's why I really prefer foreign lyricists, they may be just as bad but I don't realize it. :D
