I couldn't be happier with my recorded jazz tone

Check out the myspace (below). The new song Everything That Makes Me and the youtube clip Hoping, Wishing, Waiting.

It was a Fender 08 American Standard Jazz through a GK 1001 rb-II and a BBE sonic maximizer 462 with a GK Neo 212 cab.

Originally we were going to use 2 channels: the mic'ed cab and a "dirty" direct line with a Sansamp. The mic'ed cab sounded so good we ended up not using the Sansamp channel at all.

We recorded 3 songs. We're releasing one at a time on our myspace while we get the EP duplicated.

Tell me what you think. Be as critical as you want about the music. It's just a band. (The other songs were recorded before the singer and I joined)

I'm more interested in your opinions on the bass. This is Talkbass after all is it not?!;)

Well, since you're looking for criticism, the singer is a bit "pitchy" (thank you, Randy Jackson) and you and the drummer could be tighter. Not trying to be cruel, just honest.
But I do like the sound of the bass, definitely.

Marquis tone for sure.


I kind of like the singing. It's right on the edge of the cliff. I kept expecting him to fall off the edge but, he never really did. Kinda reminiscent of the vocals on Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Center of the Earth album.

Bass sound is good!
Voice could be nice but he is definitely signing above his comfort ''range'' if that makes any sense - On everything that makes me... (he is often flat - below the note he's aiming at).

No worries fellas. I'm just the bass player. I'm not a fan of the band. I'm just proud of the bass tone and I wanted to share it with you guys. Thanks for the compliments and criticisms. Keep them coming.

Yeah, man - you got a great place in the mix and the tone is right on. You're not stepping on the guitarist's toes, but there's a solid foundation going on.

As far as the vocals - not everyone can be Cedric. It sounds like he just needs to find his own vocal strengths. In the meantime, just drop him 5-6 dB and drench him in reverb!

I have fun being in the band. I like my bandmates. It is a creative outlet for my playing. Playing gigs is just about my only social opportunity. Meeting new friends. Meeting girls. Cheap bar tabs at gigs.... should I keep going?;)

I'm just not crazy about the musical direction. The music my band wants to play isn't the music I want to listen to.

Good points. I guess I made that comment because I am currently looking for a new band in my area and haven't been having much luck.:( The first band I found had great people with great personalities. We got along fine but they were going in a musical direction that I wasn't interested in, so I turned them down. Then I found another band that was similar situation. Ever since I added to my CL ads that I don't want to be in a Metal/hardcore group, my responses have dwindled haha.

It's hard to find good people that are also interested in making the same music as me. Metal is just too popular in my area for some reason. And there is no way I can let myself "settle" for something less just so I can be in a band. I will add that jamming solo is starting to drive my crazy though:spit:

I can see some real potential, decent song and there is talent all around (yes, including the singer - he sounds better in the other songs). If you haven't sent the EP out for replication yet, though, tune the vocals. Nearly everyone does it these days. And pull the singer back in the mix. Keep at it!
