I don't get $400 preamp pedals ...

Cool - I'm definitely psyched on mine.
It's kept me from laying down money on a Fusion head.
I'm using it with MBP cabs and the concept is great: Plex + whatever size cabs and watts you need, depending.
Also has been excellent for recording.
Every time I talk about it here on TB I just sound like I'm shilling for GK, so I'll stop there.
I feel like that sometimes when talking about things I like. Not sure where the boundary is between advocating and shilling, but sometimes I think it's fuzzy.
As long as they're not paying me ... I bring the hurt to those I don't like (Get me talking about Fender, sometime) as much as I praise what I do like.
I can't help being a "fanboy" of products that are well made, useful, and cost-"efficient".
Not mentioned here, but there is a Tech21 Q\Strip in the TB Classifieds for $175. If I didn’t already have two of them…

That's a great EQ/DI.
I just listed my GK Plex in the classified. I've ordered another tube preamp, so I need to divest myself of some gear.
I don't get people that have Nobles, and feel the need to have another pre on their board, tech 21/Bassrig, etc.
A good DI requires a good transformer and they ain’t cheap.
Two fiddy for a pro standalone DI. Radial JDI - Jensen Equipped 1-channel Passive Instrument Direct Box
Add this into a tone sculpting section on a preamp pedal and you’re easily doubling your input cost.
Simple math really.
Darkglass, Sansamp, et al can’t risk their reputations on cheap audio transformers.

Well I didn't pay nearly that much for my VT Bass DI/Preamp but it's certainly worth having a good quality DI/Preamp in case you lose your amp on stage and need a decent sound through the PA, Plus some people always go direct, which means your DI/Preamp is your rig, essentially... worth getting something that delivers exactly what you want in that case.
What else are we supposed to do? Talk about what bass is best for metal? Hang out with our families? Actually play the bass? Nah....let's defend our frivolous purchases while we plan the next.

Well just for cheap at home fun I use the Zoom B1 Four. And I don't have it on the floor I just stick it on top of my amp and press it's wide flat pedals (levers?) down to get whatever different effects I want, so it operates more like a rack mount in that way I guess.. ~Cost? ~$100! And well worth it for the fun I get out of it! Some say it's not got the most fantastic of sounds, but hey, it's very simple to use and it turns my amp into a studio modeling version of itself. 
As the thread starter, I should perhaps apologize for how the original post was formulated. Didn't mean to troll, but I can see how it could be perceived as such. I did end up ordering the MXR M81 Bass preamp, which seems to cover my needs at a more sensible price.
I don't mind people buying the gear they like at the prices they can afford. I guess I just felt that some gear is overpriced for what it is, and maybe consumers should be more critical at times.
But to the guys who "researched" my previous posts on talkbass (just because they thought the premise of this particular thread was stupid), I say "Seriously consider getting a real life".

The MXR is a good choice for a less colored sound. Since you started this thread, I ended up buying a Tech 21 BDDIv2 for my band rig. You're right that there's a lot of variation in the market. Nothing I play is cool and any "flavor of the month" pedals I have are likely yesteryear's cast offs I bought on the cheap. But it all sounds good and does what I want. And that's the point.
To have compared many direct boxes and DI-preamps, I agree with the conclusions of this video. The Radial Engineering JDI Passive Direct Box rivals many more expensive models, it has a Kyber crystal in it, a Jensen Transformer, a speaker emulation filter and what's more, it's small, it's green and its name reminds me of something...
With a Xotic Effects Bass RC Booster / Bass RC Booster V2 / BB Preamp pedal or a Darkglass Microtubes and maybe some compression, you can take on the Galactic Empire !
