HA! Me neither. I usually play, very quietly, something like "School Days" from Stanley or "The Chicken" like Jaco. I'm trying like heck to do an approximation of "Uptown Funk" 'cause my country band wants to be cool.

I have 3 songs I play to try out a bass. They cover 3 different areas of the neck, but they ain't fancy. 1st position= Flirtin With Disaster. Mid-neck= Wild Nights (John Cougar). 12th fret area= Come Together. Then I start on arpeggios.

I play Peg when I try a bass. Good line, moves over all the strings and past the 12th fret. Also use Jamiroquai stuff. I don't slap. No one thanks me, but I like to think that maybe someone appreciates the subtlety of my licks. Of course, there probably isn't a soul in GC that knows "Peg" anyway.

I just test drive the bass.... not looking to be musical, play a song, or impress anyone. Mix of slap, and finger.

Sadly 90% of the basses hanging on the wall are out of setup or need strings.

No, you may not try out basses there unless you have an irritating slap riff. I just play scales. I'm barred from GC for this failure. It has left a huge hole in my personal experience and badly damaged my self-esteem.

In GC, absolutely. In a boutique bass shop or a trade show things are different. I don't like trying out equipment around other bass players.

I usually try parts of my originals band songs, I figure that's the stuff I play so I should see how it sounds on a different instrument.
