i dont understand!

Got my ashdown mag evo II head today, plugged it in, i dont have a cab yet so was just going to play through a big pair of headphones...........

But it doesnt work.... surely it should though....... speakers plugged in to output but i get nothing... am i doing something wrong??

nope, fair enough! ok say if i throw my zoom b2 unit in to the configuration... and have the headphones plugged in to that, but using the ashdown as the amp instead of the zoom unit??

DON"T EVER PLUG HEADPHONES INTO THE SPEAKER OUTPUT OF ANY AMPLIFIER!!!!!

You'll blow the headphones and possibly permanently damage your hearing!

Same goes for the Zoom pedal. Do not ever plug the speaker output of the amp into a pedal.

I bet the Ashdown has a "preamp out" or "line out" jack though; you can plug that into the Zoom, and then use the headphone jack on the Zoom. Beware though, the output of the preamp/line out from the amp is a lot higher level (louder) than your normal bass signal, so you'll want to avoid too much distortion by keeping the levels low.

As to why the headphones didn't work, it's probably because the headphones were rated 600 ohms, and a normal load for that amp is 4 or 8 ohms. The higher the speaker impedance, the less power the amp puts out. 600 > 8.

Is it possible that your headphones were fried immediatly when you plugged them in? Everything else is ok but bad headphones?

Yikes, why don't we give eupharies a break! I've been a bass gearhead for 25 years, and I've never thought about problems with headphones into speaker outs.

that only applies to tube amps or rare ss amps that have output transformers like the warwick hellborg power amp. the vast majority of solid state or hybrid amps work just fine without a speaker load.

and even toob amps are okay as long as you keep them in stand by.


And this ashdown evo ii amp puts out how many watts? 300 or so? can't remember.

But most headphones are 600 ohms, and can take about.... 1/4th of a watt, or less. So, it won't work!
