I don't use any effects. Am I missing something?

I've written this before, and will repeat it again. Pedals are a tool, something extra to offer the sonic taste buds. Why let the guitarists have all the sonic fun? Sometimes, it is fun to bring in some flanger, or some wah. Without effects, it would be a mighty hard to play funk bass.

There is only one situation where I am completely effectless on bass...a bluegrass group I play with. Primarily, I am on fiddle and harmonica, but I backup on bass when the upright player cannot be there.

I can either take that as a remark on how useless my fiddle playing is...which wouldn't surprise me...or how versatile I am...which makes me smile.

It's weird to me that people are actually opposed to effects.

I play clean literally like 98% of the time, but if someone's rockin out on FX, more f%$#n power to them.

Weird how so many people want you to play just like them, or according to some preconceived notion of what a bass should sound like.

If you are layin some sick sh$t down with FX, let me hear it.

When it comes to bass music, the more ideas the merrier.

Yup, that. I can totally understand someone not using effects. I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would be opposed to the very idea of effects. Are we musicians so insecure that we have to invent reasons to look down on others?!

I had no idea my question was that loaded. Again, thanks for the feedback, and I'll get out of the way of the food fight.

I think in your particular situation, effects pedals are far from necessary. It seems like you are interested a little anyway though, so my suggestion is to avoid the "Multi effects" units. They all sound like crap and are difficult to negotiate. Maybe come up with an extra $125 and buy you an envelope filter or something fun, then play with it awhile. When you get tired of it, trade it for a flanger. When you get tired of that, trade it for an octaver. Etc., etc.... At least that way you can see what's out there on the cheap. You never know, you might find something you really, really dig. If not, you can at least end on a compressor, which is always useful.
