I feel genuinely dissapointed.

Are you from the U.S.? All Fender basses purchased after some day in 2017 come with a 2 year warranty for the original owner. Even then.. sounds like something a soldering iron could've fixed. But I'm sure you could've gotten that taken care of by Fender if need be. Hope you're able to score the bass you liked back.

Currently I'm in Mexico. IIRC, the 2 year warranty also applies here.

Good luck.

Next time you get a bass you like, hold onto it! Pickup change and wiring are simple stuff; even if you "shouldn’t" have to pay for it, pay for it and keep the instrument you otherwise love.

If the seller won’t switch back to the first bass (he’s losing his profit in all this shipping), I’d offer to pay to ship the silver one back. I agree that the pickup in the blue one should be a warranty repair

I can understand your disappointment. Personally I think the Players are currently the best value in the entire Fender catalog. Unfortunately there are so many reports of Fender basses with issues at the moment that nothing surprises me anymore. But without pics I simply can't believe that the frets are different. Surely even Fender can't mess up THAT bad? Unless there's a problem with the neck I'm guessing it's just different setup or older strings that makes it feel different. But I've seen some Fender necks (both MIA and MIM) with weird bumps lately so I guess it could simply be a bad (or less great) neck. Modern CNC manufacturing is no guarantee that two seemingly identical necks will end up the same.

As for replacing the pickup I personally think the pickups are one of the best things about the Fender Players (I haven't tried the Jag but I assume they're the same as the Ps/Js?). They have a slightly different voicing than a "vintage" Fender but so does the V-mod in the AmPros and I know which one I prefer (hint: it's not the V-mod). I really like the sound of my Player P. The hardware on mine was shockingly poor but apart from that it's a solid bass, if somewhat overpriced compared to other options without the Fender logo on the headstock.

I bought a MiM Strat off Musicians Friend about a decade ago. It was one of the special models made just for them and I got it at a special price. Basically it had the same hardware as US instruments and Vintage Noiseless pickups which were both upgrades.

I think I got $150 off because it was a customer return, or something like that. When it arrived it was perfect except one of the saddles on the bridge was stripped and could not be adjusted. You can currently buy a replacement saddle for $4.50 retail, so maybe I should have just bit the bullet.

I called and asked them to send me a new saddle and they refused. The part and shipping probably would have cost them less than $10, so all of you who think a large chain music store will do what makes sense have got it all wrong. They have all sorts of arcane rules in place, that don't make sense to anyone!

They insisted I had to return the instrument and they did not have another one in stock. I asked if they would give me the same discount on another guitar that was almost identical, and to my surprise they said yes. So I got a brand new Deluxe Player's Strat for $150 off the normal price. Everything is the same, except the color options and the Deluxe Player's Strat has an extra button so you get all 7 pickup options instead of the normal 5. Everything I wanted, except the color :vomit:.

I really struggled to choose between sunburst and a weird shade of blue. Eventually I went with the blue, but unfortunately in person it's really, really dark unless it's under super bright lights. Shoulda gone with the burst as I think those tend to be brighter in person...I really loved the way that first guitar looked in polar white with gold hardware .

This is not my guitar, but mine is about the same color under bright light. It's actually a pretty nice little entry level guitar with a slightly chunky neck. But I totally understand how it feels to get the rug pulled out from under you. I was super stoked when I unboxed the first guitar.

This is called "being a customer". If you buy something you are unhappy with you have the right to ask the seller to correct things. If you are dealing with a reputable seller then they will do everything they can to make you happy...all the way up to a complete refund.

This is why I buy online. Too many lemons at brick and mortar stores, plus AMS, MF and SW have excellent return policies.
Exact opposite here, whenever I have a chance to inspect & play Any instrument in person the result is better than online. With some instruments (like wind instruments) it's inconceivable to not play first. I also don't expect an online purchase will be OK, maybe 50% chance of some disappointment. Only bass I've bought online was a Sterling 5 by EB in butterscotch, 1st one had a chip out of the finish on back...I was disappointed but Not Surprised. Too high of expectation is dangerous. It causes Anxiety in some people.

ps the great bass / small flaw reaction is off...the great bass is like good LAND, you don't sell it because it has a falling down shed on it or needs some drainage. I just has GC do a pu re-solder job, it was $29.

No need to "upgrade" the stock pickup, it is a good as anything aftermarket.

Ummm... No. 2 weeks ago the tone pot in my Fender Aerodyne started getting scratchy. It wasn't what I'd call a cheap bass so I wondered why it was doing this after only 2.5 years of use. I figured that I'd just lube with some Deoxit and everything would be fine. I was still wondering why it was getting scratchy already. I popped the cover off of the back and much to my surprise there were cheap JS pots in there. These pots go for 69 cents all day long. I expected CTS pots. Since an upgrade was in order, I thought that I'd take a look at the pickups. There was no identification anywhere on them and they weren't potted. I had noticed a tendency for the guitar to feedback at higher levels and now I know why.

Now the Aerodyne is fitted with CTS brass shafted pots, an orange drop cap and Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders.

You get three darts... two have been used. Make the next one count.

Good luck, with this... gotta be happy with your purchase! Not sure why the seller/dealer didn't offer to repair the defect. Did they even get back with you, confirming the precision pickup had no output?

Strange things happen when we get something new... brain disconnect, expectations, flaws (maybe perceived, maybe not)... when I received my first real bass, I was so excited... to the point I had trouble opening the case. Serious. Brain disconnect.

I say, make it right... it's your hard earned money. The dealer should be offering options to ensure you're happy with your purchase, AND they're not losing a boatload of money over the deal.

Your experiences differ from mine. My overall disappointment has been around 5% or probably less in online purchases. Maybe I'm lucky? I've been buying online since the mid '00's. Last time I bought an instrument in a guitar store was in 2001... it was a BC Rich guitar. I've never had any kind of cosmetic blemish on any instrument I've bought online. I guess it depends on who you buy from. Musicians Friend and AMS have been golden for me.

I can post pics of all my "online" basses and guitars... still in borderline mint condition, and some were bought as early as 2004. I had two of my guitars, a Carvin 7-string and Mexican Fender Strat, recently worked on by a local tech. Other than that... only minor adjustments for intonation, etc... were needed on basses and guitars.
