I finally found my sound

It took a few years, more basses than I can remember, couple of diff amps and tons of different strings but as of yesterday I found my tone!

There have been many times over the years that I believed I found "my tone". Then the onslaught of variables took me out back and beat me up 'side the head:

• Every room has its own unique acoustics. Tone changes, sometimes dramatically, from room to room
• Temperature and humidity effect tone
• Age and condition of strings effect tone
• The tones from all the other musicians in your band will have a direct effect on how personal tone is heard
• A player's distance and angle to the bass cab(s) and any other bass-reproducing source (i.e. Floor wedge) effects tone
• The cleanliness of a player's ears effects how tone is heard
• etc., etc. etc.

And I have found different rooms or types of music or aging can change some finite parts of your tone but once you have gotten it, it is a great feeling

Playing bass is a lot like dirt track auto racing ... you nail the set-up perfectly, and there is a euphoric feeling because the car is fast and works everywhere on the track you put it .... after riding that set-up for a couple shows, you find something has changed, the track, your tires, the temperature, whatever, and you find yourself chasing it again ...

Funny you say that, I also found my tone yesterday after 35 yrs of playing...for about 5 minutes I felt it was perfect.

I have had the same fleeting glimpse of the perfect tone maybe 5 times (all radically different). Eric Clapton once said that he has never found it. Jeff Beck said that while his hands do the same things his perfect tone comes and goes depending a myriad of external factors.

The Cirrus I used to play was my benchmark for tone (still one of the best sounding basses I've played) but now it's my custom five string through a Mesa 400/Ampeg pro series fridge. Oh, add Kalium stainless strings to that too.

Which is why I'm bringing it to GC tonight to A/B with a potential trade (for a different bass I own). It might be NBD today...
