Congrats... cool bass.
Ironic to me though that this is essentially the exact bass I played from age 13-17 and I was ecstatic to move up to a two pickup bass with adv updated design.
Meaning...sometimes you don't know what you've got until it's gone lol

Why not? The bass's look was built on mojo and being gigged with. You'd have to REALLY bang something up to FUBAR that bass. Granted, I might be worried about stealing.

I gigged it last night for the first time. Showed it to my band and soundman and their jaws dropped - loved the way it looked. I ran in through a TU-3 tuner and EBS MultiComp and into my Aguilar TH500 (mids and bass bumped - my usual) and into a stack of DB112NT cabs. The 61's tone control was wide open. I was amazed with how perfect it sounded. I usually have to tweak each bass' tone knob to suit my needs but this was dead on at 100%. Happy! We broke into our first tune and I looked up at our soundman after a few bars and he was waving thumbs up at me. I figured it was the bass. He pulled me aside between sets and told me that its the most perfect bass tone he has ever worked with. Very flattering! Furthermore, my playing last night was through the roof. The bass allowed me to tap into a whole new realm of inspiration. I was on absolute fire and the band let me know after the gig. All were like "wow - don't ever sell that bass!" Everything finally felt "right."
I've reached my pinnacle. I'm at the top and its a extremely satisfying and liberating feeling. I wish this feeling to all of you. What's the coolest is that I got engaged to my dream woman and acquired my dream bass within the same month.

This is an awesome story and experience! Thanks for sharing. I e wanted an old best up mojo'd P like this even before I started playing. Very inspirational. I'm happy for you man. I hope I can score something along these lines at some point in my life. IMO these kinds of P's are IT. No substitute.
We're in-laws related! I have the same bass, same year. Slightly less worn. Serial # 57469. What is yours? I got it from my father-in-law who bought it used in the early/mid 1960s. All original except one side of the pickup was cutting out, so the 2 solder points for the pickup were redone. Too bad I cant post a pic. Its got both covers, etc. And, of course, sounds GREAT!

As much as I love my 2011, this is exactly what I still consider to be "The Real Deal". Beautiful!

I've seen you have or had a american vintage reissue 63. How would you say this real deal compares to the new american vintage?
I owned a new '63 AVRI for a short time. I returned it to MF because I couldn't get the action low enough with having to shim the neck which I found unacceptable on a new production bass.
The '63 AVRI was a great sounding bass. The neck was a bit beefier from to back than my '61. The '61 is actually a more aggressive sounding bass which I happen to like - more growl. Playability-wise, nothing I've ever laid my hands on (I've owned more gear than I care to admit) even comes close to my '61. It's the epitome of a perfect vintage Fender bass. It really is the holy grail. I'm willing to "bet the farm" that any bassist who plays and hears it will walk away pie-eyed and lusting for one.
Saddles were bottomed and action was still sky high.

And how does it compare soundwise to your 1970's? Does the 70s give more of a vintage vibe than the 63 American Vintage? I'm thinking of buying a really realy 70s or a 63 American Vintage.
I had a 69 that i liked soundwise, but I could'nt get used to the playability, even after it was set up right.
The '63 AVRI I had and my '71 were drastically different, mainly in neck shape. The '63 AVRI had a 1.750" nut width and was quite meaty. My '71 has a 1.625" nut width (maybe even slightly slimmer) and a much more rounded contour on the back of the neck.
My '71 also had a VERY warm and woody tone compared to the '63 AVRI. So much so that I strung it with rounds to bring out more high end.
