Thanks this really helps. So I understand the 71 had more of a vintage tone that comes somewhere near the 61. Then I think i'll look for an eary 70s that suits me and leave the 63 for what it is.

Is there any way to know if a Fender J or P is authentic, without taking it apart? I'm just wondering, if I happen upon something that looks "authentic" while at a swap meet or garage sale, etc., what to do? Is there a maximum sale price that YOU would just take your chances with (doing specific research later)?

Very interesting point... one that Rich alluded to in and earlier post and one that I made mention of in my P-Bass Holy Grail thread, as well. Like Rich's bandmates, mine immediately heard a positive difference in my playing and tone - even before I turned around and they could see a different bass.

There's an inherent tone of an instrument that is based on constants (pickups, woods, etc.). Unless you're willing to change components, they're fixed. They way a bass feels, and the players response to that feel, creates a synergy that comes out in tone, playing, and ultimately... the overall performance.

To my ear, the overall playability of an instrument is at least as important in determining the way it sounds as the components. That's why Geddy always sounds like Geddy and I can recognize Entwhistle's tone, no mater which bass he played.

I gigged it last night for the first time. Showed it to my band and soundman and their jaws dropped - loved the way it looked. I ran in through a TU-3 tuner and EBS MultiComp and into my Aguilar TH500 (mids and bass bumped - my usual) and into a stack of DB112NT cabs. The 61's tone control was wide open. I was amazed with how perfect it sounded. I usually have to tweak each bass' tone knob to suit my needs but this was dead on at 100%. Happy! We broke into our first tune and I looked up at our soundman after a few bars and he was waving thumbs up at me. I figured it was the bass. He pulled me aside between sets and told me that its the most perfect bass tone he has ever worked with. Very flattering! Furthermore, my playing last night was through the roof. The bass allowed me to tap into a whole new realm of inspiration. I was on absolute fire and the band let me know after the gig. All were like "wow - don't ever sell that bass!" Everything finally felt "right."

I've reached my pinnacle. I'm at the top and its a extremely satisfying and liberating feeling. I wish this feeling to all of you. What's the coolest is that I got engaged to my dream woman and acquired my dream bass within the same month.

I'm a bit late to the party.....but WOW!!!! You lucky man! That is a score of a lifetime. Glad it's working out for you.

Like you, I can't help but look at an old bass like that and wish it could talk.

God help the face and limbs of anyone that would try to pick up my bass without my permission.

I'll try to get sound clips at some point. I thought of sitting my recorder on top of my amp for the gig, but would only really capture the sound of the bass and not the band.

Not exactly a bad thing, though. :)
