I played for years, then quit out of boredom and lack of inspiration. TB has a lot to do with my renewed interest (and GAS) and new lease on playing for over a year now. I love playing bass now, too. Now if I could only get off these forums........

I truly love playing the bass too! For a while I was fixated on being in the spot light by playing lead guitar. So I suppressed my passion for the bass. I started playing the bass and fell in love with it... Out of all the instruments I know how to play, nothing can come close to the bass.
See... That's where some of you people have it backwards...
I quit lead guitar in one Project to focus on bass in my new power trio. The bass parts I play are way harder than lead guitar, way cooler sounding, way funkier, way more in your face, and more important.
Wanna draw attention? At a gig, just randomly stop playing for a while during a song. See if the whole thing doesn't fall apart.
Next time get your lead guitarist to try that. Watch while nobody in the crowd cares....
I must concur with the OP. I do sometimes wish I had started 40+ years ago, when I first decided to...yet it's never too late if you're breathing.

Sounds about like me. I spent about 15 years TRYING to play guitar.. and with the bits of theory I've learned recently and practice I could probably improve on it. I never was able to find people I clicked with musically on guitar. Drums and bass players were non-existant. I mean come on, guitarists are a dime a dozen. I switched to bass over a year ago and started taking it a lot more seriously earlier this year. I took lessons for a couple months which resulted in a somewhat better understanding of theory than the small misinformed bits I'd gather with minimal instruction on guitar. I love what I can do with two fingers on my bass. I haven't used a pick for it ever, although I need to start carrying one to let blisters heal. (can't believe I actually have a blister underneath my callous..guess I need to stop playing so hard in the mix lol) I actually feel and hear myself improving the more I jam with my band.. which my band loves that they have a reliable bassist, as we're harder to find than a guitar player. I love having a drummer to jam with regularly.. and if the guy I'm playing with now is any example drummers just LOVE a competent bass player. And hey - I may not be able to keep up with the like of Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey, or Jaco but.. deep down my soul was always meant for the low end and punchy mids of a bass guitar. I too wish I had picked it up much much younger.. but it does feel wonderful knowing you're part of the rhythm section that's going to be responsible for bodies moving on the floor.
ALL THAT BASS IN YO FACE!!!!
*edited to say I'm still coming down off of jamming with the fella's earlier.. and this thread kind of sums it up.
