I Funko Pop'd My Band!

Hi Everyone -
Funko Pop started offering "Pop Yourself" a year or so ago. I had some downtime, so I ordered custom Pops of my bandmates and got out the acrylic pen markers and went to work.

Here's the result:

A special shout out to @WI Short Scaler who did the same with his band a few months ago!

This will be enhanced with some similar scaled Beatles stuff, so more photos will follow soon.

Those are awesome Chris. Glad to see someone else thought it was a good idea. What did your bandmates think? Were they surprised?

I used one of our old Tshirts that matches our banner and set them up like a mini stage, the changed our FB page cover photo without ever telling them.

Thanks Chris. Yep, I had hoped to customize these before Christmas, but Funko ran out of what I needed to complete the job. So far I've received minimal feedback from my bandmates, so we'll see if that changes over time. I've only received a "Wow!" and "That's Cool!" response, and have not heard from everyone. Heck, I'm only the bass player so chances are that's as good as it will get.

I too, have updated our Facebook page with a photo of the Pops, as well as the main page of our website. Michaels has a lighted display case made for Pops which will work perfectly as a stage setup, so I plan to set this up once I've received some ancillary Beatles accessories which will be added when received.

BTW, I just noticed it's currently on sale for $39.95 which is 50% off.

Kind of disappointing when you do something like this and they don't at least acknowledge it in some way. But at least a couple of them liked it. My bandmates thought it was very cool.

That case is a good idea if you're going to take it to gigs. I gave my bandmates theirs, so ours are in our respective homes. We did bring them to a gig before Christmas and took a photo of us with them. Here's the link to our page Hijinx

I may bring the display to a gig, but we'll have to see. I have no doubt it would interesting for our audience, but it would be a PITA to transport and to keep safe. Most likely it will just be a fixture in my music room where our band rehearses. I'll be sure to post updated photos when the display has been completed.

Funny - It's great you were able to add nicknames to your Pop boxes for each member. I only tried using a nickname on ONE box, and Funko rejected it. Our primary percussionist is named Doug - he goes by "Dingo" (combination of Doug & Ringo.) I guess they thought this was a dirty word, so they would not allow.

re: responses from bandmates: i used the prompt "very handsome...." to make some AI-generated pics of each one of my bandmates for a video of one of our tunes. they were indeed handsome --- way more handsome than my bandmates are in real life --- none of them ever responded to seeing their handsomeness, except the drummer, who complained and admitted that he felt like his spirit was stolen from him (by not using a real picture of his bad self! ).

musicians can really kill a party vibe! i hope your bandmates are a little less uptight!

I, too, would not appreciate having my likeness uploaded to a Chinese/CIA/private/corporate database to be re-engineered into future derivative works without my consent.

In fact, I had to let the singer of my band know as much when he did the same.

the video is below, but i misspoke i think, or what i posted was misleading: the handsome pics (a few are posted below) are images that i shared with the guys, and they just weren't impressed. these images came after the YT published video that depicted the musicians (via AI) as fairly weird/funny (hilarious to me, possibly offensive to them, "odd" to "creepy" for certain others) --- but in other words, i published the video for the tune, got silence/crickets from the guys, ramped up to re-do the video with the handsome pics but got no support --- only the drummer responded with the 'stealing the spirit' sentiment. anyway....

I assumed since you said you made "pics of your band" that this was one of those regenerative tools that takes a seed image and generates similar images, i.e. that you uploaded photos of your bandmates in order to generate new, original images that bear their likenesses (as was done to me). All those apps are sketchy - one of the most popular, FaceApp, was suspected to at least be using user submitted data for generating derivative works, and possibly also using it for training Russian government sponsored surveillance tech. FaceApp - Wikipedia (They cleaned up their act once they started attracting heat, but where there's smoke there's fire.)
