I got it back!!! (Rickenbacker content)

I got back my '77 4001 that I bought in '78 and sold in the early '90's (my dumb butt). It's in great shape for the age and the fact that it's been played. I was worried about the condition since I hadn't seen it for 18 years but opened the case and Wow! still looks great! I'll be playin' tonight!

At a quick glance I thought that they were wavy Grovers that were stock on Ricks from about '72-'74 (and have shown up very occasionally on models from other years, as have some of the older features). But, they have a little ring on the tuner shaft that is unlike the old wavy Grovers.

They might be newer-style Grovers.

reminds me of the 4001 story i have. when i started playing that was my first bass. bought from a guy that painted mercedes benz cars for a living. so, unfortunately it was mercedes grey with a clear coat and a mirror pick guard. i sold it as i was a young dum man that needed "the best bass for metal". im still kicking myself over that.

beautiful bass indeed my man!!!! enjoy

Nice, and congrats. Sometimes I think I'd like a few of the Ric's I let go of over the years, but the 2 i have now, both post '06, are better than any I've had previously. And I'm sure, whoever has those older ones now are as happy as I was when i owned them.

The other part of the story is that my dad's health is failing and he bought me the bass when I was a teenager. He thought I was wasting my time with music but believed enough I guess to buy me an awesome bass and I was always touched by that. So the bass is more sentimental to me now than when I sold it. I contacted my friend that bought it a couple of years ago to ask if he would be interested in selling it. He said he would but after checking prices I was shocked to see how much it had appreciated and there was no way I could afford even $1000, so I thanked him anyway and forgot about it. Then out of the blue a couple of weeks ago I got a call from him (we've grown apart and seldom talk anymore) saying he wanted me to have the bass back. I told him I still didn't have the money but he said that didn't matter he wanted me to have it. I told him I could offer him my Ibanez but that's all I had. He's a guitar player and just likes to have a bass around just in case. He said that was fine. I couldn't believe it but also couldn't turn down the generosity especially under the circumstances.

Now *that* is a friend.
