Its just OK. The lowend on the pre amp seems a little week. It is a little more floppy than Im used to. I dont know that im gonna like the 34" scale. I am willing to give it a shot though.

Try flattening out the neck a little.

make sure you string it up with you favorite set!!! this is a important step in the bass feeling like you are use to. I had 4 string black jazzer that year. really great sounding and playing bass. I have never liked a 34" five string so I am with you, but if you give up on this one try a fender 4 banger imo that is what fender does best.

Agreed with the other responses... A Fender really shines in a live situation. They have a tone that really slots in the mix without getting in the way.

Thanks for all of the comments guys. This bass has actually changed my mind about fender. You are all 100% correct about needing to hear it in a live setting. It sits great in a mix. I have bought 4 other fenders since this purchase. So I guess im coming around.

I own and play a lot of Fender basses, they're good solid instruments and Leo's designs still work well all these years later. They're not cutting edge but they are classics IMO.

I have a 97' 55-94 and it just kills! In my opinion, it's just not fair to compare any other basses to it. It's that good! With that said, I own several other 5 string basses, including a couple of Fenders. A 2005 Custom Classic and a 2010 American Deluxe. While the Lakland is my one and only, these others add color to the palate. Like all basses, each has its own voice.

I have a '97 Fender AmDlx J V..... I love the Suhr pups and pre in it. These basses are incredibly punchy and grunty. They sit wonderfully in the mix. You do have to be a bit "easy" on the B, but all in all, they're great players. Enjoy it!
