The reason why a friend plays guitar is because he can't count.

I was playing with a high school band about 3 weeks after I bought a bass when I was 13.

The guy didn't say "You'll be playing like Entwistle in a week."

Some people need to relax, I think....

Ehh, take it with a grain of salt. Sometimes people waste to much time arguing and justifying their instruments. If you enjoy playing, that's all that matters. Everyone else can think what they want.

The other day, I was talking to a guitarist. He seemed like a reasonable guy, and had been playing guitar for ten years. I mentioned to him that I played bass and his friend then said "oh really? I'd like to play bass!" The guitarist was quick to say, "Bass is easy, you'll pick it up in a week."
Getting defensive, I said to him "Like you would know". He gave me a look and then stated he had been playing bass for eight years.

Rather than getting defensive, I think the best rejoinder you could have pitched would have been to start laughing uncontrollably.

My response would have been.... Guitar was easy, I picked it up in about a week! I wanted more of a challenge so I moved on to bass where theory, rhythm and broader working knowledge of music in general is required.

i had a producer tell em if i ever move to nyc he wants ot put me to work becaus eim a "real, real" bassist, and he was sick of using guitar players or even layign down tracks himself.

people who really know music know the difference.

I ran into some guys playing acoustic guitars ont the sidewalk. I said kind of jokingly "One of you guys needs to pick up the bass." The one guitard responded "but that's no fun."

Well, I guess it means that guitarist doesn't play bass any better after eight years, than he did after the first week.

less strings mean there are less of the same notes

to play guitar you can just play 3 chords and solos

bass you have to know how to fit in with the sound and lock in with the drummer and no chords

I don't care how long anyone has played an instrument, I have to hear you play to determine how well you know your instrument.

bass you have to know how to fit in with the sound and lock in with the drummer and no chords

By the same coin, you could just play root quarters as the bassist. Both instruments are equally challenging, but in complete different ways.

Threads like this really make me start to think that some people play bass because they really are insecure about their failure at guitar. Really all the justifications for how bass is just as hard as guitar make me laugh.
