Double Bass I hate both my basses. (DB forum thread)

Today I practiced for about 3 hours and played both my basses. Here is the oddity...

I play my baby, the Frankenstein the 1920 shop bass and enjoy the sound, doing the exercises yadda yadda yadda..

I pick up my other bass, Elizabeth, pizz the first note. In my head: "Man this bass sounds horrible..POS!" It was an inexpensive bass so there ya go, right, but wait. I practice on this bass for about 45 minutes and at the end, I am loving the sound, I was cranking on it.

I go back to Frankenstein. Start playing and I Hate the sound! I was like *** is going on here. How could I hate Frankenstein?

Both basses play a different and have their own preference of playing. I got that. I think what may have happened was my playing unconsciously adjusted to the bass and when I switched to another one, the bass' preference to playing was not there at first. Unbelievable, I hate both basses.:eyebrow:

Does this happen to anyone else or an I a head job? Man, that actually scared me when I didn't like playing Frankenstein.

I hear ya one day I'll pick up a certain bass hate it to the point I want to sell it then I'll grab it the next day and it's love again I think it's just the typical bass relationship unless you have a model(Fodera) to live with. :)

ever tried getting a new set of strings? just a fresh set, not a new brand or anything. Another idea is to practice in a different room (preferably a bigger one). I'd eliminate all the elements before going for a new bass.

That being said, it may be that time. Sometimes your bass just isn't doing what you want and need it to anymore. I had that happen to me with a nice german shop bass, and traded up. I do stress that you can't let GAS get the better of you!

good luck on your quest. stay thirsty, my friend.

Sounds to me like you actually like both basses, but for different reasons. Why not just practice on the one you are going to play the most? I have two basses myself, one at the office and one at home. The office bass is a laminated "copy" of the home bass by the same maker, and with the same dimensions and setup. I can get used to either bass as long as I don't expect either to sound like the other.
