I Hate That My Taste Is So Specific!

I can't find a back up bass that I love to go with my '71 P bass. I keep buying basses and getting rid of them because I can't get into anything as much as my P. I do like a nice early '70's Jazz and I do love nice P/J's, but it's hard to find them for sale for a fair price.

I have a Sadowsky Jazz that I think is really nice, but I want to sell it and buy another vintage P or a Sadowsky P/J, which suits my sound taste more. I only want my next bass to be Olympic white and rosewood, a combination hard to find in the years I like for P's and I rarely see that combo for Sadowsky P/J's for a fair price.

That's my vent haha.

When I was a little younger (I still am, just even more younger :D) I only liked metal. Throughout the years I've made music and listened to music, my tastes have diversified by meeting people who got me into stuff like jazz, electro, classical and so on. None of those things I liked from the getgo. It took me a while to get into them.

I'm betting the same goes for basses. At the moment I'm into p's and I just my feet wet in stingray-style active basses with an ATK I bought second hand. I didn't like it from the getgo, just like with music styles. But I'm growing into it. Same goes for the music I've listened to. I didn't like jazz on my first listen, but I've gotten there.

I feel you have to put some effort and time into new things to like them. Not saying you are inexperienced or anything like that, as I don't know you. Just saying that you might grow fond of your sadowskies if you give them some time.

Good luck!

I feel I'm young as a bassist at 23, but I definitely know what I like. I try to keep my ears open at all times to hear everything or as much of everything out there. I listen to everything from country to pop, jazz to metal, and everything in between. I appreciate all music.

When it comes to bass I like a particular sound or tonal range and that generally lies in the low-mid. I can listen and easily appreciate other tones, but I particularly enjoy what I enjoy. The Sadowsky as my Jazz is very nice because it has every tonal range I could ever want out of a Jazz.

I only rule out basses because it gets expensive to just "buy" basses whenever you like them. I like particular looks just like anything else in life. Color does matter to me and the wood matters more. I prefer Alder and Rosewood. I wouldn't buy a vintage bass and change its color. I find that sacrilegious if the color is original.

I guess I'll just keep looking and look into the Custom Shop.

I would agree with that statement, however, when I was 16 I bought my first American Standard. It was a 2003 P. In 2004 I bought my first American Jazz. 2005 second American Jazz. 2006 I purchased the American FSR matching headstock Jazz. 2007 I purchased two P's. I've since sold them all because nothing got played next to my '71.

What is it that makes your '71 so special? I guess you can just keep your eyes peeled for another one and hope you can get it at a reasonable price.

The only thing I could think of other than that is to try and find a Tokai Hard Puncher (P copy). 80's basses that were copies of 70's Ps, some with the same Fender headstock shape and similar logo (often referred to as the Lawsuit basses).

doesn't matter if it doesn't get played as much as your 71. Thats why its your main bass. You said you were looking for a back up to your 71...

Well, my '71...It's the best sounding P I've ever played. It also plays amazing, but that I can replicate. I had a local guy, Phil Jacoby (philtone.com) re-fret it because it needed it. I had him cut a fresh bone nut for it since the old was filed too low and he plek'd it for me. His set up on top of everything else is IMHO is the best in the business.

It must be a combination of tone and playability.

If it's just a backup, then you have to ask yourself. Do you ever actually USE the backup if you don't HAVE to??

My backup to my P bass is an Ibanez Rickenbacker copy at the moment...
It doesnt sound anything like my P bass, but I know I'll only play it if I absolutely need to, like if I break a string or the electronics fail or something, I can still get through the show.

I don't know what your budget is, it sounds high though...

I'd get another early 70's P, or heck, even a 60's if you've got money to blow. But that's just me and I'm obsessed with vintage Fenders. You can't expect it to sound exactly the same beacuse they all sound different...

From a realistic, save-your-money-for-something-else attitude, then I'd say get a 62 RI. Even a MIJ/CIJ or something to save some dough, maybe put some fresh PU's or a nice bridge on it, and be done. It's just gonna sit in the case anyways, right?

I can defintely understand what TheDialog wants in another bass...the only things that can touch my '69 Jazz is other Jazzes from the same old era.

As far as the Geddy Lee Jazz, not even close, sorry but they don't feel, play, or sound like any of the handful of vintage Jazzes I've had here.

I'm 14 and I know what I like. Pbasses and Eden amps. :D One can cheap and the other can be pricey.

I've played 2 70's pbasses before. Nothing comes remotely close! Best dang basses I've ever seen or played.

I don't know if this is a legal post... as some sites are sensitive to this. I am new to TB. I will follow the rules.. so moderator take me down and scold me if this is wrong.
But I will be selling 2 early 70s P basses within the next week or so. I know to advertise, don't you have to contribute ?(which I will if need be cuz I like this forum) but I'm not providing details and technically right now they are not for sale. But soon. One of the reasons they are not yet for sale is because I may keep one, and need to see which one I fall for.

i understand you to a point..but have you been able to pinpoint what EXACTLY it is you like.sound?feel?neck? the reason i ask i have a similar dilemma.as posted elsewhere i have an aria avb from i think 1990or 91 and its i think worthless to anyone but me..but its like a pair of old shoes its just so comfortable, very fast neck fits me perfect and its worn out.preamp is shot i have basicly a similar sound to a p.bass and no adjustment.the output is not what it was..you could offer me 20grand for it and i would never sell it...my point is maybe you have found the exact bass for you and nothing will ever come close..i belive its not the make or model its just the guitar..

Spinal - I want more of a running mate than a backup. I want to find more basses that I want to keep forever because they play and sound that great. I do have money to spend. I tend to buy and sell basses a lot and when I find deals I don't pass them up, but I always end up selling them because they just don't compare. Check my profile and you can see some of what I've bought and sold. I'm very partial to early early 70's P's because of the body style not being as bulky, as well as, the neck not being as bulky. I prefer a more contoured, slim bass. I'm more into B width necks, which also puts a damper on my personal taste, but I've found certain C necks to be do able.

Bstring - Geddy's don't play or sound anything like the real deal Geddy.

Caca - I know you get it. I don't want to spend money on having the exact same thing, but at the same time doing as much as I do musically it's worth it.

Alien - PM me what you're thinking of selling.

Ridge - It's the bass as a whole.
