People here have said the Warwick Corvette Standard is a sure player in the "low Mids" range. And as an owner, I agree.

Hmm, why don't you just build a custom bass with the things you want? those things could be:

1) Fingerboard Radius/Material
2) Fret Size/Material
3) Body Style/Material
4) Neck Style/Material
5) Both Pickups, the ones you like
6) Fully adjustable bridge, the one you choose
7) Color Combo

And the list goes on and on... i'd suggest USA Custom Guitars...

It isn't going to cost you more than a CS Fender... and with the spare money you could just PLEK the custom one to make it really, really a joy to play...

And now i just read you want it as a backup bass... so forget everything i wrote and buy a Squier P Special.. Nah, just kidding..
