I have a problem with cover/tribute bands.

What you feel about others says everything about you, and only you.

So let me get this straight. If I think someone is an ***hole, it's me who is the ***hole? Sorry, never liked nor understood the logic behind these kinds of statements. As long as you're honest I think it's very possible to accurately feel and understand others as they are.

That said, it's also possible to judge other people and groups based on your own insecurities, much like what is happening in this thread.

When we make judgments about people, those judgments will affect no change in the person/people we are judging. But it does speak volumes about where our thoughts lie.

I include myself in that...we all do it. But I think we should reassess why we judge others in the first place (since it doesn't change the judged).

Having said that, an open dialogue can affect change, even during heated judgmental disagreements.

I think the main point of the conversation is: What are your thoughts on Original Bands playing multiple covers in their set in the context of a Rock Club, and how is that different/similar to cover bands?

The Quarrymen were doing skiffle music - PURE covers.

Even as the Beatles, the first record they released that had any noteriety (in Germany) was "My Bonnie"...you know, My Bonnie lies over the ocean....etc

So I guess they are sell-outs?

You like Rush? When they first got together, they were mostly doing a lot of Cream and Iron Butterfly covers. SO I guess they are losers?

and the list goes on.

Playing "original" music doesn't automatically elevate above those of that don't. It's sort of like telling a portrait artist he's no good unless he's doing landscapes.

To each his own. I get a charge out of what I do, and I take it very seriously.

And I'm playing in front of bigger crowds, having more fun, and makng more money doing this than I ever thought I would.

But I guess I have no "street cred" , unless i'm playing a lot of crap no one else cares about?

Music is music...have fun at what you're doing....but don't be jealous of cover/tribute bands because they are doing better than you. It's nonsensical.

yeah, all those bands started with covers to get their chops. and they didn't stick with them exclusively. The Beatles thing is especially funny, since cover bands have been butchering their songs in beer gardens and sports bars and open mics for the last 3-4 decades. i dunno about you, but the Beatles at least inspire me to WANT to write my own stuff.

or to put it another way: Rush released that covers EP where they did a Who song (both are favorite bands of mine), which i think was still The Who's cover of "Summertime Blues." but no matter how you slice it, i'd rather hear Rush originals than hear Rush cover The Who.

If your goal is to be the next Beatles or Rush, though, you can't continue playing covers forever. At some point, you need to take the plunge. If your content being in a cover band, so be it. But I think being in an original band does give you the privilege of knowing that you are helping to move music forward, in your own small, insignificant way. You can either be the best builder of Model Ts, or an engineer working on the newest thing. Unfortunately, sometimes the newest thing is an Edsel!

Granted. But I have no INTEREST in being Rush or the Beatles! I passed that particular dream about 20 years ago!!

I just enjoy playing. Just because I don't play "original" doesn't mean that what I do is less valid than so-called original bands. Just means it's different.

Oh and by the way, as far as Rush? on their last 3 tours, they have done covers. They do a fantastic version of Crossroads, by the way. Even with all their material, they aren't above thowing in a cover on tour.

i never said it was bad to do a cover (or a couple) in your set. i've always had a policy of doing one. it's not always a crowd pleaser, but is a good indication of where the band's collective head is at.

but there was definitely a real "if you are really into doing originals, you're deluded/probably poor" mentality floating around this thread, which i have a real problem with. probably more of a problem than i ought to with a bunch of faceless jags on the internet, but it bummed me out nevertheless.

Right, and when you first make that jump from jamming/playing covers to "Well, ****, if we're gonna really go for it...", its not a good idea to play more than one or two covers in your set. Its seen as unprofessional in a lot of venues. Its just as odd as going to see an Alice in Chains tribute band, and then, in the middle of the show, having them play an original. "***! I want to hear Alice in Chains!"

Rush did two of The Who covers on Feedback - "Summertime Blues", which The Who covered and was originally a rockabilly song, and "The Seeker", one of The Who's most famous singles.

Just so you know. :D

This thread needs to end. Nobody is going to concede anybody else's point, and the bickering is quit useless. Funny, but useless.

the only delusion is when people think/expect/act like they are going to "make it really big." The odds are so tremendously against it, to base decisions on it, let alone your future, is beyond delusional. It's psychotic.

I think that those of us that play for the pure joy of it know a secret those that think they are the next Nirvana or Pearl Jam do not.

I can't believe this thread is still, going. I'm sure someone has already mentioned classical musicians are all posers=). just play music and quit hating, and maybe, just maybe, if people aren't interested in playing your music........................than..........................hmmm=)

BUT wouldn't that be a cover??? cant you be more artistic and come up with something original, you know write your own exit lines? LOL

If you think about it, every note, that, you, I or anyone else has ever played has been played by someone else B4....OMG We all have been playing covers! This was probably mentioned in an earlier post as well! OK this thread is done for me!
