I have been ruined..... (For the better)

Have you been "ruined" by a bass? (read my post below.)

As some of you might know, I just got a custom Pavel bass. it have an unbelievable sound, especially the slap tone. :D All well and good right??? When I go to play any other bass it sounds like there is a wet towel draped over the strings. And it is INCREDIBLY difficult to slap and pluck the strings. A week ago, I would play my thumb bass with no trouble. Now...

Hard to believe that a bass would do this to me...But this isn't for the worse.

How many of you have been "ruined" by a bass?

when I got my first fretles, I found I couldn't play a fretted bass, without it buzzing on every note, and when I got my first 6er, I found everything else impossible to play, but its all evened out now, and I can play all of my bass's again!

I was spoiled with my very first bass, a Peavey Cirrus. I really didn't know anything about basses when I bought it, but thought the dark woods were "better". My right hand technique basically utilized the radiused pickups as a ramp and totally became the backbone of my technique. The action was set so low that other basses felt like a chore to play. I know everyone says that ALL basses can be set up to have low action, but without going boutique, very difficult to get the sort of buzz free action that I get.

I have had 7 at one point, but I always have one I go to when doing a new or challenging gig. It's like my safety net, since it has the best neck, and I've owned her for over 13 years. However, if doing something I'm comfortable or steady with, I love bringing all my girls out.

I've been ruined. I was quite happy with what I had, then two incredible deals came my way, both within a year of each other. First, a Warwick Streamer Jazzman, and then a Spector NS-5H2, with wide spacing. Both are incredible basses and just trump anything else I've ever held. Now something like a Fender feels alien to me and I wonder how people play those basses!

I have enough different basses (13) that i can play each of them without any problem!
They are all different and all have their strength and weaknesses!
You r just having a great honeymoon, give it a bit of time and im sure you will find something that your Thumb Bass does better than the Pavel!

I already know..... The thumb growls like a mother. and it seems to be better for heavy metal. But I knew that even before I got the Pavel. plus the exotic look of the Pavel kinda looks somewhat strange for metal. But that doesn't take anything away from the Pavel, I love it just the same:smug:

By the way, this is the bass... the top on this bass is 10000X more beautiful in person, than in this photo.

I'll say this - I haven't found a bass that I play as well as my Zon Sonus, and I haven't found a bass that sounds better in my hands. With that said, I LOVE to play other basses so I can't say I am ruined. I find it interesting to play every bass I can.

In my last band, I sang and played guitar as much as I played bass so I didn't bring my own instrument - I played whatever the other bassist brought. He had a Mexi PJ (liked the sound a lot, neck was bat-ish for my tastes), a G&L Tribute of some kind (didn't love anything about it, but didn't hate it either, lol), and a Spector of some kind (liked the sound pretty well and it played pretty well, but first position was far away in my hands). In the band before that one I also played a Stingray that was not mine (sounded great, but I didn't love the neck or string spacing, and it had one too many strings, hahaha). So while none of those basses were perfect, I was happy to play them, mix it up! Variety... spice of life... yadda yadda yadda.

I usually use my hands.
