i just can't play a damn 4-string...

...rookies.

:rollno:

Which one? Simple: all of 'em. Same time.

:smug:

Too wise, Gard, too wise. Reminds me of a good funny.

The young bull says to the old bull, "let's run down the hill and bleep the prettiest cow!".

The old bull says "let's walk down the hill and bleep 'em all."

It's much funnier when you substitute the f-bomb...

thx - yeah, that is the Deep 5. That thing just kills on ballads and swing tunes. And when I've got my "upright mojo" working I happily thwack away at it all night long no matter what kind of tune.

She's an awesome vocalist. We're trying to get her to broaden into some more up-tempo and soul stuff (she mostly does a solo singer/piano/songwriter emo thing). When she cuts loose, look out...

I played 4 string for about 40 years, then the devil in me said '5 string' so I tried one and liked it. Played it exclusively for about 4 years then bought another 4 string on a whim (and it was a steal).

Could I play it, could I hell. If anything it was more difficult to go back to 4 than to switch to 5 in the first place.

With a bit of practice it all came back and I now have a rule that I learn everything on 4 string, I find it easier to adapt on the fly to 5.

I have a cheap 4 string in my shack which I play the most for individual practice. For rehearsals I pick anything out of the rack, 4, 5 or fretless. I still prefer my G&L L-2500 for gigs.

I think the secret is to keep your hand in on both.

P.S. I would take #3, but at my age it is all in my dreams!

Hmm...some of you guys are making me rethink this. I'm wondering if the problem is trying to make every instrument fit into every role - kind of a square peg/round hole. Maybe the thing is to just have a 4-string and have it be...and damn 4-string. Play it and be happy. If it doesn't go on very many gigs, not the end of the world.

Feh - I'm just trying to rationalize a sunburst P-bass purchase :D

Sigh - will be here next week
