I know most don't like Gene Simmons.

I'm sorry to say this man, but I heard nothing special with those fills. Or are you saying that the difference between mediocre and pro player is that the pro player can play above the 12 fret on the G-string?
who really gives a crap, to be honest? i know plenty of bassists i can play circles around that make millions more than i do. all anyone is saying is that he isn't as bad a bassist as you anti-kiss types make him out to be and that he's actually pretty good at what he does. but i guess when you're so filled with anti-kiss hate, you can't even give the guy that. so whatever. i'll continue to enjoy his work and i really don't care what anyone else thinks. i just think a little respect is in order.
I see nothing funny about that. A lot of what JPJ did in Led Zeppelin was just root notes, not to say that there is anything wrong with that though. By the way, I'm a big fan of JPJ.
This. I respect JPJ's ASTOUNDING musicianship, but by and large, Gene's bass work in KISS was much more impressive than JPJ's in Zeppelin.
By the way, if anyone has any doubts about Gene's bass playing abilities, listen to their new record Sonic Boom. Great stuff on there.

For what it is, I liked the video. They're solid and right on their game; Gene lays it down with great rock tone, and is loose enough to throw in some decent fills at just the right moments. Guitar solo is terrific, imho. (Vocal is so-so.)
Comparing the performance (or Gene's in particular) to other genres isn't all that relevant to me; they have their schtick, and they pull it off really well live. Good for them.

JUST root notes? I'm trying to think of all of the songs you are referring to.
Well, for starters, Whole Lotta Love. I probably shouldn't have said "just" root notes. I should have said "the majority of bass in Led Zeppelin songs is root notes".
That's called playing what the song calls for.
What are you supposed to play,a bunch of fills or slapping on that song? Would sound silly...........
Not at all I did I mean that the bass on that songs is lacking. It's perfect. Did you miss the part where I said I was a big JPJ fan? Anyway, he said something along the lines of "I can't think of any songs where JPJ plays just root notes", so I gave him an answer. I also said I have no problem with stictly root note playing. I do it all the time. How about reading the whole conversation next time?
Well, I would disagree that the majority of bass in Led Zeppelin songs is just root notes. Listen to EVERY other song, other than Whole Lotta Love, off of Led Zeppelin II and then tell me he's just playing root notes.
+1 "Over The Hills and Far Away" is an easy example...believe me, its easy to throw stones, even when youre not in the KISS house.

I said I was trying to think of all those songs where he just plays root notes because you said that ALOT of what he plays is just root notes.
I have,over the last few days.Not going to sit and rehash the whole thing just so I can remember every detail that someone said.

Believe me, I've listened to Led Zeppelin II many times. No, not all songs are "just root notes", I even said that I shouldnt have said that. A lot of times, JPJ will play the majority of a song as root notes, and then have fills and runs through-out, and perhaps his own thing going on in the verse. (ie: Heartbreaker) But of course, he has many songs that are the farthest thing away from playing root notes.
