I know most don't like Gene Simmons.

In all seriousness, Gene isn't my favorite bassist, but he did inspire to pick up bass and I actually learned to play bass entirely on KISS' first 6 albums before I went and expanded. Plus I think he gets a very bad rap for no apparent reason. I mean sure, nowadays, he would never be considered fantastic, but if you were to keep HIS ego from blinding YOU, you would see that in the beginning, he was a true hungry musician and bassist and he wrote alot of great basslines and music and nowadays, he does alot improvising live. Very nice basslines for back then.


You don't have to like him, no problem.

Just don't bash on the guy when he clearly knows what he's doing.


And I will continue to validate and promote Gene Simmons the bassist, and I make no apologies about that fact.

FYI, Robert DeLeo/Jamerson are my favorite bassists, with Gene close behind.


Now I'm hungry for a grilled cheese sammich with bacon in the middle.

Learn to hate correctly.

Fer instance, Gene does think his mother had a virgin birth.
And, he thinks she is the mother of god.

All I can say is wow! 18 pages and a few good vids, I've been a kiss fan for 36 years, have two rooms in my house with nothing but kiss stuff in them, if its out there I have it or had it. Heck I have the coffin already and will be put in it when its my time. So let me sum it up, No one in Kiss plays great, Gene is a good bass player, better then me. LOL. I have a hard time learning kiss songs, but I suck.He has some good riffs, and fills, impressive not really. I do not! like gene as a person, he knows how to make money, and is very good at that. If you like his playing fine, if not fine. Simple as that. How does this get turned into 18 pages of crap?

I never listened to Kiss much, but I look at that guy kind of like how I look at Nikki Sixx...might not be a virtuoso, but since these guys also double as the songwriters, and have written a ton of hits, they're very good bass players.

I checked out the clip from the first post. Those are KILLER, and I mean, KILLER bass fills? HAHAHA...right....

Were they appropriate fills, in key, in time, fit the tempo? Were they improvised (they arent on any record, btw)? So what would constitute a KILLER fill in that song for you? Please, please, post a clip of that song with you(or anyone else) playing better fills(extra points for doing it in costume in front of several thousand people).

i'd bet Gene can outplay and knows more about music than 90% of the posters on TB. He has never aspired to be a jazz/fusion guy & to compare him to jazz guys is no different than saying Lance Armstrong isn't a KILLER athelete because, even though he's from Texas, he never even played football...much less for the Cowboys.
