I love High End Gear!!!!!

In addition to having sounds that I am pleased with, I enjoy knowing that I saved my money for my gear, and that with every note, my purchase is reaffirmed.
The defense of high end gear is the same as having to defend a certain type of higher end car or watch or anything else. Sure, a Ford Escape will get you to work the same way a Mercedes S class or BMW 7 series will, but they are not the same. A Timex will give the same time as a Rolex, but once again, not the same.
As with anything - tools, clothing, etc. I buy the absolute best that I can afford, and strive to keep it nice, so it lasts for a super-long time.

Sorry x, but I'm not on your side. Getting your chops busted on Talkbass for owning high end gear is a bit like getting your chops busted for having a really hot girlfriend. I'm finding it hard to work up a good head of sympathy.
The only reason that last thread existed was to show people who can only afford low end gear that they don't have to think they're relegated to inferiority, and that they can be every bit as good on their cheap stuff as someone on their expensive stuff. I've got both. I have a little bit of high end gear and a little bit of low end gear. I really don't care what I use as long as it does the job. I don't think I'm special because I own a couple expensive basses, and I don't think I'm special because I use cheap ones onstage most of the time. I think I'm special because I play well

I like highend gear myself. What I have said for the last few years is that alot of lowere end gear sound pretty good too!

Dr. Cheese, there is no doubt in my mind that there is a lot of great sounding less expensive gear. I still regularly play my MIJ Jazz that I paid $450 for a number of years back. That bass is like my child. I will never give it up.

I agree, I also don't own any high end gear on that definition.My definition of "high end" is "stuff I can't afford." Therefore the LMII is not high end.

I can't say much about "high-end" gear, i don't even know what that means? is something high end if because it's expensive, hand made, high profile, low profile what?
I will say this. It is ABSOLUTELY the driver not the car.
I played the united center in chicago with mos def and common with a 4-string fender squire, red piece of junk. The fact of the matter fellas is though tone and quality are very important to establishing your own tone, your hands and ear take care of a lot of that.
only if you are looking for a sound you can't replicate, or your gear is failing to push the appropriate ammount of sound should you worry about getting new stuff.
the larger the venues you play, the less controll of your sound you have, once your tone hits those stadium speakers it's up to the sound man. Oviously recording is different, but still. You could rent anything you needed for a session. YOU still have to play it.
i dunno, i'm not saying expensive gear is bad, i'm saying depending on the sound you're going for, (and i'm only saying that to cover my back) it doesn't matter.
here's WHAT DOES MATTER.
1. Get your action set JUST the way you like it. this gives you the dexterity you need, or atleast makes sure your bass isn't getting in your way.
2. Find strings that generally and consistently produce the overall tone you like, but don't go nuts.
3. get an amp that's easy to carry. I'm on tour with jonathan davis of korn right now and am using the swr natural blonde with two 10" speakers. that with monitors is all I need. soundman pushes the rest of the sound. the easier it is to carry, the more places you can go!
i also keep my heavy rig around just in case, a couple of 4x10 cabs and two or three sm 900's but those don't come out the box super often.

Yes, yes, yes...thanks for reitterating what has been said a million times. Nobody is debating here that a good player can sound good no matter what equipment he's using.
This is the strangest place I've ever been to for talking about bass. There is so much judgement. Those who play less expensive gear think that those that play more expensive gear must be snobs or show offs.
Again....NOBODY IS DEBATING THAT A GOOD PLAYER CAN SOUND GOOD ON CHEAP EQUIPMENT.
LOL. Well, I think MY Little Mark is pretty darn high end, so there!
If we want to talk really high end, my niece is a professional cellist. She is in high demand around the country as a soloist, and she makes a very good living at her craft. It's a good thing, because to buy her cello, she had to take out a loan larger than my home mortgage loan. Now, THAT'S high end! (She buys an extra airplane ticket when she travels so it can sit in the seat next to her.)

easy tiger. I'm new here, i don't hav time to read the thousands of posts to this comment, an I never said highend gear makes you snobby. i think maybe what you mean to say is...you really like having gear that sounds great right out the box, and feels just the way you like it. And true, generally the more expensive stuff, particularly if made by hand feels better.
in any case i doubt that you won't be signing on for a few weeks. hahahaha i've been on here 20 minutes and i'm hooked.
