I love my D'Addario Tapes

I was referring to the way the ball ends don't have direct contact with the bridge when the strings are put thru the body. This can sometimes result in grounding issues with tapewounds. That's what I was wondering about.

I put the Tapewounds on again yesterday... man I love my Tapes. So much more subtle and nuanced.

They are fantastic strings. I have an Am Performer Precision P/J that I bought in the fall of 2020. Very first week of owning it I replaced the pups and controls, with CTS and Switchcraft components and Aguilar hum canceling pups, no Greasebucket tone circuit, and strung it with D'Addario tapewounds.

Almost 4 years later, it's the only string I've used on that bass. I also love D'Addario half rounds, use those on one of my 3 Jazz basses. Using D'Addario Nickel Rounds on the other two Jazz and one MIM Precision. Use D'Addario Chromes (flatwounds/short scale) on my Fender Kingman Acoustic. D'Addario just makes great strings.

Probably need to put a set of Chromes on one of the two Jazz basses with rounds.

The BB35P is passive as was the BB435 I had before it.
The tone of tapes lives somewhere between Flats and Roundwounds, but more on the flatwound side of the spectrum. With muting they get thumpy, play up on the neck they get glassy, with hard strikes they become very snarly.

That's a good description. I've also found they can get a little glassy and gritty when digging in back over the bridge pup(wide open) on my PJ (Aguilar AG 4P/J-HC pups) and the neck pup turned down a hair.

Maybe, but I doubt it. Didn't matter though, when I swapped the pups out I left the wiring as intact as possible between the original pups and controls because of the greasebucket tone circuit. I didn't want to have to wire it all back together later on down the road if I had to for some reason. Had to snip the jazz pup and ground loose going that route and that was it.

I recently put D'Addario tapewounds on my Sandberg TM4 (avatar pic) and am LOVING them. I'm still in the honeymoon phase (1 month) but I'm finding new ways to express myself while playing, which is my goal with any new string experiment. This is my first time trying tapes (!!) and I've played bass since 1974. Duh. :D
